Absolutely, Adam. Another thing... In my head I'm an 18 year old doing the stuff I did at 18.... but that was 42 years ago, now I'm 60, I have to take a bit more care; if I fall I break, if I tire I may never get back. Agree with your "family" comments completely, so, for me, 60 means I take early retirement, struggle to afford life, but grasp the opportunities I've missed for years. I've lived and worked in the countryside for my whole life but with age has come restricted travel so now I need to look for opportunities nearer to home.... but I recently bought a 105 macro and my world (as a professional botanist & entomologist) has exploded with opportunity. Have a great week. I look forward to bumping into you on a shoot :-)

Another good video full of great advice. My wife and I both suddenly lost our mobility from being fit active people. All I can say is if you have it use it, because you never know when you might lose it.

Thanks Mark. I do often think of you. When I injured my back I basically couldn’t move for about six weeks. Since then the fear of returning to that state has held me back. Like you say though, I need to use it and get back on top. I’m aiming for longevity rather than the supreme physical prowess I used to display on the rugby field. Besides, its probably that that led to my back problems anyway.

First Man Photography It’s amazing what can lead to very painful conditions, and no one wants to rush into a situation they are concerned might exacerbate their condition. As you say is about steady improvement, not rushing to do a triathlon next week.

Great advice! I yo-yo with weight but one of my drivers to lose it is planning hikes and wild camps for the spring. It makes me work at weight loss in the winter. Fitness and being comfortable with the outdoors are so important! One bit of advice I’d add on safety, I see lots of toggers perched on cliff edges, really there’s rarely the need, a metre or so back is usually fine. We do a lot of this on our own in remote places - safety first! Great video as ever Adam. PS your birch trees and cliff image in the last video was superb!

I have a lot of backpacking and hiking experience in the Colorado Rockies, Sierra Nevadas, and the Grand Canyon. Your advice is spot on. I would like to add that trekking poles can make a world of difference in uneven terrain. Also footwear is so important. You don’t necessarily need heavy duty hiking boots, but you need something supportive underfoot. I wear hiking boots because I’m a klutz prone to misstepping and rolling an ankle. And finding the correct socks that work for you and won’t rub blisters is also very important. And consider packing along a small first aid kit and an emergency blanket. If you are going into the bush for an overnight or longer you will need some form of water treatment, like a SteriPen or iodine or chlorine tablets, or a squeeze filter like a Sawyer or Katadyn BeFree (my favorite). Just because the water looks clean doesn’t mean anything. You really don’t want to get a case of giardia or E. coli. Most important have fun and realize not all trips have to be about epic landscape photography. I’ve done a lot of backpacking with nothing more than a iPhone for a camera or a small Fuji point and shoot. It pains my heart to leave my DSLR behind, but it doesn’t pain my back, hips, and shoulders ;-)

Excellent tips Adam. One you touched on that I'll expand a bit is to become a student of weather. Study the apps you noted, I also like Clear Outside, know what conditions are likely to form fog, where the weather typically originates for your area, understand cloud formations and how they impact light, etc. In my opinion, being a student of weather is crucial to landscape photography as well as to safety. Again, great tips Adam!

Hi Adam. Lots of excellent stuff here. I was a hillwalker first and then started photography to capture the great views I found. I'm lucky enough to be able to map read and navigate and always pack appropriate kit. I'm out and about at least twice a week, so my fitness level is ok, but I still need to lose around a stone, so I'm definitely onboard with your plan. There are two other things things I always take with me on the hill: a hot flask of coffee and a bagful of enthusiasm !! Good luck with the weight loss plan - looking forward to your update (I'm guessing after Christmas !) Great video Adam. Huge thanks for sharing.

Hey Adam! First of all I want to say how much I continue to enjoy your videos. You are a great mentor and very honest in your approach - thank you! I'm not a nutritionist... just getting that out there now... however, I too was in a position where I know I had to lose weight but wasn't sure how. I'm not one to jump on a fad diet as to me, that's hard work. I'd rather stop doing something than start (a mindset shift for me). My ha-ha moment came after watching "That Sugar Film" on Netflix last year. Controlling my sugar intake (but still eating healthy food and good meals) allowed me to lose 48 pounds in about 7 months. The best part for me, is that a year later, I have kept that weight off and it has not been a hard task. Try not to go for sugary foods for a quick fix as the steep drop on the other side is just as bad, when you're out and about. Slow release foods will keep you going a lot longer... but... it's never a bad thing to have emergency rations 😊. I wish you well with your personal challenge and thanks again for being an inspirational photographer!

I can completely relate to No4, my wife is disabled and I am her full time carer, this makes getting out and about very difficult with regards to accessing locations, most of the time I am stuck at home caring for her needs, I possibly get out once a month at best at the moment, I do tend to get a bit stir crazy at times when I see perfect weather conditions and I'm unable to get out.

One more - take care of your knees! 12 years ago I took way, way too much load on a mt Blanc summit photo op thinking "if I can lift it I can carry it for 3 days". And yes, I could and I did but to this day I have some knee damage from that trip. Don't overload and go lighter, you'll miss that one lens or something else but there will be plenty more opportunities in the future.

Adam all great tips thank you for sharing , There is just one point that I think is important . As a photographer who does alot of hiking in search of the image I would like to say nothing can spoil your day like being wet to the skin specialy in high winds and low temperature so do use water proof hiking pants they can save the day.

On your first point. I’m pretty fit and often headed off for a few miles to take photographs. But the one thing that I hated was lugging my tripod around. It’s an aluminium Manfrotto 055. With a quick release ball head. Steady and reliable but weighs over 3kg. Strapped to the rucksack it threw me off balance when scrambling and caught on branches. I ended up carrying it on my shoulder or like an assault rifle. A complete pain. So I bought a carbon fibre travel tripod (Vanguard Veo 2) that weighs 1.3kg and folds up far smaller. It’s obviously not as tall or as stable, but the ease of transport more than makes up for it. On your last point, a good pair of hiking boots are some of the best money you can spend. Lowa, Hanwag, Meindl, Haix, Scarpa, Asolo, Vasque etc. The extra expense will ph off because they’ll last far longer.

So I had my Hips replaced when I was 16 years old due to a bone disease, despite this, at heart, I'm an out door guy, I love being out and I try to walk as far as I can but obviously now I'm 30 having false hips for majority of my life I find it difficult to go as far as I'd like. I'd say if you don't have any conditions then you have no excuse because I'd love to be climbing mountains and taking images and some of us don't have the choice. Wow that sounded like a rant but please make the effort to go further and do more. I'd love to make it as a landscape photographer but mobility will always be an issue for me :)

Thanks for sharing Adam, enjoyed a different tack from todays video. So little time some spend on the right gear and then they wonder why they go down so quick. I think people need to realise that even in the relative safety of our own Uk, people die in extreme weather and when they don't prepare right. Best wishes.

Hi Adam. Some sound advice. In regard to food.. Liquids / water is more important, you can go 7 days without food. But only one day without water. In regards to liquids I recommend sports drinks that contain electrolytes and other minerals that your body loses when exercising. I know you talked about clothing foot-ware having the right foot-ware will prevent injuries and keep your feet warm and dry. For safety recommend take a whistle and compass as lest I take a GPS system with me so I can give coordinates if I am lost in bad weather. (So far hasn’t.t happened) and blow the whistle to provide further assistance so that rescuers can find me with the sound of the whistle . If you can inform someone on your planned route that you plan to take.

Very nice tips, which aren't necessarily that obvious, especially for newcomers. I agree with most of them, especially the backpack one - recently i purchased F-Stop Loka UL and it blew my mind, or rather backs (in a good way of course ;) ). What a positive change! I can see you're using Ajna model, which I also considered but it was just too big and heavy for me, I like going light ;)

Adam, can you make a video (or share some advices) about protecting your camera gear if it's not weather-sealed? Most of us have cheaper cameras and lenses, so it might be a good idea.
@Firstmanphotography
@Firstmanphotography 5 жыл бұрын
I’m not I sure I can. It would be a case of ‘do as I say and not as I do’. My cheaper 800d vlogging camera is not weather sealed and I always get it wet. During that trip with Morten it died and came back to life after we dried it by the heater for a while. My attitude is I would rather get the shot and have the camera die than miss the shot. I can’t afford to replace cameras either so I’m not the best example in this area.

That's a great idea! FYI - I recently did a photo/hiking trip in Scotland. It rained off and on everyday. I used a 13 liter Sea to Summit dry bag to cover and sometimes drape over my camera. I did a full-on face plant in the mud at the fairy pools and my camera (not me) came away completely clean and dry.

edmdeposit A good big umbrella. Like a fishing or gold umbrella. Strap it to the rucksack or use as a walking pole when it’s dry. Pop it up and hold it in the crook of your arm which gives you two free hands to operate the camera.

I also use an iPhone app called Avenza PDF Maps to look for and load detailed digital maps from national forests, USGS and other agencies or custom maps I make or find form other cartographers. Worth a look if you're into using digital maps and geographic apps for planning.

I'll second this, I'd be less concerned with overall weight and more concerned with how I'm feeling when exerting myself (hearth and lungs). Loosing some weight may be a welcome side effect to getting in better shape but I'd say it's our energy levels and stamina that are really at play. That said, best of luck to you on getting more fit and loosing some pounds!

Getting to like these videos, well presented. One comment, a kilo of fat is the same weight as a kilo of muscle! But muscle looks better, can lift its own weight and burns fat as it works. There is nothing but nothing to commend excess fat. Get rid of it, feel better and live longer. It's very easy formula, eat less calories than your body uses, the difficulty comes that as you get older you need less calories!

Hi Adam loved the video I can agree with everything you said, BUT sugar is a big no no. It's best to eat carbs without added sugar. The added sugar dose give you a hit but you quickly come down from that high. May I suggest getting a FitBit charge 2 or the like. My wife and I where trying to get fitter and loose weight but as we where getting fitter we did not loose weight so we got a fitbit each, logged what we eat into the fitbit app and the fitbit logs what calories you burn plus other necessary facts which are useful to know. It's a great motivator. We lost 6% body fat and put on 3% muscle just buy eating healthy and moderate sensible weight training. It's important to do the weight training correctly and as the fat comes off what's underneath, looking good. Good luck with the weight lose and getting fit. Check this youtube bloke "Mike Thurston" for gym work, he's excellent and better still from the northeast like us.

In normal life I would totally agree about the sugar and it is something I have cut out massively. However I have seen a sugary treat literally save people struggling on a mountain top. I suppose a cyclist style gel pack would be preferable but they are a lot more expensive than a flapjack or yorkie bar.

Just listened to this week's podcast. I don't know how you can be so spectacularly wrong... The point is simple: One company (Squarespace) is presumably making money off photographers (in fact, you and other photographers even talk them into using Squarespace...). At the same time, they engage in a business relationship with another company (Unsplash) that very actively damages photographers' businesses (irrespective of whether individuals post their images there). This is an ethical problem. Companies are responsible for all their doings, including their business relationships. I don't understand how you cannot see that.
@Firstmanphotography
@Firstmanphotography 5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm. This is exactly my point. How can my opinion be wrong? It is my opinion on a subjective (or ethical if you prefer) point, therefore it can not be wrong, just different. Different opinions are OK. For all the uproar over this issue I am yet to hear from any photographers business that is being 'damaged' by Unsplash. Maybe there are a few, who knows, but it's business afterall and the business environment, especially in photography, is constantly changing. Most people are going to love Unsplash. As a pro photographer, if you have left yourself vulnerable enough, to have your business 'damaged' (what does that even mean in business?) by Unsplash because you have solely relied on stock photography income, then I would suggest your business was doomed to fail at some point anyway. I'm not going to immediately hate Unsplash and Squarespace because one blogger hypothesises that Unsplash is 'actively' damaging photographers. Where is the evidence? where is the data to support this? What research has been done to prove this hypothesis? It's a classic trait of fake news. Creating a hypothesis and passing it off as fact. The scientist in me wants to scream.

To a certain extent you're confusing "fitness" with "being trim". You have a slightly larger than average frame. if you lost 4 stone you'd be like a twig. Twigs often aren't fit - keeping in mind the bag you're obviously going to be lugging around too. You're talking about losing fat, not weight. Also sugary food probably isn't the right advice. You want constant energy, topped up throughout, not a sudden hit of sugar - because half an hour later you're going to crash anyway and be looking for more sugar. A sugar hit when out for the day is pretty much an emergency, when you're struggling to get back to the car, not when you're halfway through the day. Everything else - bang on.

Good on you, mate. A while back I set out to lose some weight, figured I could do without 10-15 lbs. Turned out I had no sense of how much I really needed to lose, and I ended up down about that 4 stone you are targeting. 7 years later I've kept it off and for the past 3 I've increased my focus on fitness and now I run about 100 miles/month. Overall it's made a world of difference to me, mentally as well as physically. I feel so much better, I sleep better, I like who I see in the mirror better. It's really worth it, even though it will be hard at times. Stick to it, you and your family will be glad for it in the long run!

My best advice is to aim for slow and steady. Don't try these crazy diets that promise 20 lbs lost in a week or anything. I simply made some diet changes (cut out alcohol and desserts for the first few months then phased them back in, cut out soda completely, still have never gone back), drank a TON of water, and consistently lost 1-2 lbs a week. I feel that gradual loss due to real diet/lifestyle changes is much more likely to become permanent. It's hardest in the beginning, but that's also when you have the most motivation. Stay with it for 3 weeks until it is habit and there's a great chance it will stick. I also feel like I've become a much better role model for my kids, and that really helps my mindset!

I also am overweight and struggle at times, and be honest it does impact on my enjoyment of photography because everything just feels so hard and difficult. I have booked a holiday in March in the North West Highlands of Scotland for photography. You have now have inspired me to get much more exercise, lose weight so that I may enjoy my photography. Keep up the fab work Adam, and again thank you Adam...

Awesome video. Thanks. Excellent tips as always. This cough that's wandering about is damned annoying. Am just shaking it off now myself. For what it's worth, and with the proviso 'check with a dietitian' your body (any age) will try it's best to adapt to what it needs to do (the body knows what it's doing - it's been doing it for millions of years). Weight-loss is not difficult, it's the adapting to dropping bad weight is. For me, I simply cut all sugar products, prepacked meals and swapped to keeping my meals more to the size of my fist (which is kinda the natural size of the stomach). Small meals and slightly more frequent worked well. Occasionally hungry is not bad - starving or feeling faint is. Funnily enough, keeping a pouch of oats and some herbs 'n stuff can make for a very nourishing trail-meal. (old Scottish highland style :) ) If I were to be wandering harsh landscapes, I'd adopt a more hunter-gatherer attitude. That was what they did back then. They ate small, varied and frequently. They carried heavy things at times and adapted to it. They didn't rush much. It worked for thousands of years. (Again, anyone messing with their food, bounce it past a dietitian.)

Well done Adam - good to hear some one talk about human health and the outdoors as well a photography. A possible next step would be to discuss the health of the landscape and photography - how we as photographers can help safeguard the landscape we love so much. Get better soon!

If you are still recovering in bed get a copy of the book 2020VISION - an inspirational project coordinated by photographer Pete Cairns - combining photography with restoring our natural environment.

Hope you recovered from your cold. I totally agree with your alternative ideas. I might add one: I have always a second pair of shoes in my car, plus a pair of dry socks and a towel. Why? I usually get wet feet when I am near water, especially on a beach.
