Thousands of people protested in Tenerife last weekend, calling for the Spanish island to temporarily limit tourist arrivals to stem a boom in short-term holiday rentals and hotel construction that is driving up housing costs for locals. Foreign visitors to the Canary Islands, an archipelago of 2.2 million people, reached 13.9 million in 2023, 13.1% more than in 2022. Overtourism has become a menace across the globe, with tourist hotspots imposing restrictions and asking tourists to stay away, even if their economy depends on it. So how can countries deal with overtourism? Palki Sharma tells you.

The problem is, there are a lot of tourists out there who want to just 'backpack' across wherever it is they're going and basically spend as little as possible, and so tend to scope out resources usually utilized by locals. This can be coupled with the 'closed-loop' nature of 'tour packages', which are often times most beneficial to the hotels and not the 'Mom and Pop' shops in the area. Personally, whenever I travel I look to go to areas less sought out, and certainly make sure to eat at local places and stuff of that nature...

Canary islands are beautiful just like the Philippines. It has desert,air forest ,beaches and volcanoes. If there are advantages that tourists bring there are also disadvantages that they bring like garbage . I think countries that attracts millions of tourists every year should have time to clean their tourist spots. They have to schedule it every year. If they will stop tourist to come in, this will greatly affect their economy. Millions of jobs will be affected like airline companies, hotels, catering services,transport operators, handicrafts and other support industries like farmers, fishermen,etc., and each of these people have families to support.Theres no problem in tourism industry. Just make it sustainable.

I like the idea of Venice's daily fee model. By charging $5-$10 per day they can increase revenues and lower the number of people coming at the same time. They could also manage minimum stay lengths; new fewer than 10 days in a hotel for example for non-residents.

Some countries are charging US$10 and it’s nothing and tourists are still pouring in their millions. You need to start at US$1000 with an option to raise it to US$2500, the situation will correct itself real quick. Use some of that money to subsidize the living standards of locals. The problem of protests will go away.

These people are the locals. People who don't live on tourism but suffer the consequences, ie, lack of housing at affordable prices, lack of food and other goods at affordable prices, rubbish everywhere, packed shops, buses, crowded natural sights, etc. They do not oppose tourism, how many times do they have to say it?, What they oppose is having more tourists than the system can handle, and they want to cut down on the number of non locals buying houses there. Spain in general has got a problem with the number of appartments available for the people. You simply cant buy or rent because the demand is so much higher than the offer, which means vey high prices and going through a thorough process of selection to rent a flat. Everybody wants people to spend money on their city, until you realise it makes you poorer and poorer because all prices go higher and higher. It's an island, goods come from the continent at a cost. It's not so difficult to understand.

It’s easy to fix overtourism. Put tariffs per person that visit like US$1000 per head. If they’re still pouring in their millions, raise it to US$2500 and use some of those funds to subsidize the living standards of the local residents. A US$10 fee is just a joke.
