The UK wanted rid of the islands because migrants have shown up there from Sri Lanka and there is a humanitarian and legal crisis that has been occuring for over three years, with people living in terrible conditions on the military base in tents. The majority of Chagossians can trace their routes back to the largest island, Diego Garcia, which nobody is allowed to inhabit now for 99 years at least. The US has a 99 year lease on the island, and the other atolls don't have airports, docks, protection from tropical storms, any land suitable for agriculture or any existing habitation. All this has done is that it has increased the maritime territory of Mauritius so that they can have more fishing rights, and it has ensured that the UK is not responsible for the migrant problem. It has also ensured that the illegal occupation of Diego Garcia continues indefinitely.

@conormcmenemie51262 ай бұрын
Were the Chagos islands ever part of a corporate state known as the Mauritius? Could they be returned to such an entity? The term Mauritius was an administrative conglomeration created by French colonisers. The Chagosians were slave labour who stayed, then expelled to make a USAF and Navy base in the Pacific. Dieago Garcia is in essence an isolated and resource poor island in a vast ocean with a future which would only inspire poverty and inbreeding. Next stop - Gibraulta, which again would be handed over the the USA, since if it were given to Spain, it would be an impoverished rock in an extension of the Sahara, except with good fishing and access to the ocean.

I’m of Mauritian descent but born in Britain, and I am a proud Brit. I fully understand why the UK didn’t return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius upon its independence in 1968. Strategically, Mauritius has long been regarded as the key to the Indian Ocean, a region of critical geopolitical importance. The military base on Diego Garcia, within the Chagos Archipelago, has played a vital role in maintaining regional security, ensuring the stability of international sea lanes, and supporting broader Western interests during the Cold War and beyond. However, while the strategic reasoning made sense, the way the Labour government of Harold Wilson handled the situation was deeply wrong. The forced displacement of the Chagossian people, expecting them to quietly fade away, was a gross violation of their human rights. These islanders were removed from their ancestral homes, families uprooted, and livelihoods destroyed, all without proper consultation or compensation. To make matters worse, Britain pocketed the £50 million annual lease from the US for the military base, while ignoring the plight of the Chagossians. After decades of tireless struggle by the Chagossians for justice, I am proud that Britain, my country of birth, has finally done the right thing. The decision to return the Chagos Islands to Mauritius is long overdue, but it is a just and moral outcome. From 2036, a new 99-year lease will be established, and this time, the income will go directly to Mauritius. This is a major victory for both Mauritian sovereignty and for the islanders who were wronged for so long. Mauritius, a nation with very few natural resources, has always relied on its people to drive its progress. Since independence, the country has worked incredibly hard to build a thriving, diverse, and free-market economy, becoming a model that many African nations look to for inspiration. Every time I visit family there, I am amazed by the continued positive development on the island, driven by the dedication and resilience of its people. The new lease income will, I hope, be wisely invested in furthering the island’s economic and social progress, contributing to a fairer and more prosperous society. I am also pleased that the military base will remain operational, ensuring continued regional security. While the base provides strategic stability in a region that remains geopolitically sensitive, Mauritius also benefits from the added security that comes with hosting such an important military presence. Moreover, it’s worth noting that another military base is currently being developed on Agalega, a Mauritian island, under a lease to India. With cooperation between India, the US, the UK, and Mauritius, we are witnessing the emergence of a powerful alliance for security and peace in the Indian Ocean region. As a proud Brit, I am relieved that our government has finally done the right thing. While it has taken far too long, the return of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius signals a significant step forward. It is a moment of justice for the Chagossians, an affirmation of Mauritian sovereignty, and a reaffirmation of Britain’s commitment to doing what is morally right. This new chapter in British-Mauritian relations, along with our shared security interests, represents a positive future for the region and the world. ❤🇬🇧❤️🇲🇺❤️🇮🇳

Said subsidy has been removed by current government and inflation is in excess of 1000%. Yes i mean 1 thousand persent increase in prices. If you like, the Angles from Denmark and the Saxons from Germany took (colonised) Brittannia from the Celts (native British tribes) and turned it into an island fortress called Great Britain 🇬🇧 which later resisted the Spanish Armada 🇪🇸 Napoleon 🇫🇷 and Hitler
@Ededdneddy92 ай бұрын
@@AaRr-bn3xxYou really need to read a history book, the celts were not native Brits, they conquered the region by arriving from northern Spain. The romans then conquered England and wales from the celts while other areas like Scotland (where I’m from) gradually integrated with the romans. And in Ireland their traditions were eventually replaced with Christian beliefs and customs In the 5th century Roman Britannia was annexed by Germanic tribes, who divided up the English and Welsh lands into different kingdom’s. None of these kingdoms were referred to as Great Britain, that term was created in 1707 when the formal unification of Scotland and England happened and was an homage to the romans

There were native peoples in the lands that are now Britain and Ireland (these are the people that built Stonehenge and other Neolithic sites) but they were largely killed off by the Celts who invaded

Learn your history. The Chagos were a dependency of Isle de France, which later became Mauritius, and we're administrated by it until the British invaded and captured Isle de France in 1810 and its dependencies in 1814. Native Chagossians lived there before the British and have developed their own culture, music, food and cuisine which is intrinsically linked to Mauritius. Yet they have been forcefully and brutally evicted from their homes by the British when Mauritius became independent. It's time to correct this injustice. Mauritius is also a safe and free secular liberal democracy with high standards of living and much better food than the UK (see Mark Weins's latest videos)
