Rwanda Says it Can't Guarantee How Many Asylum Seekers it Will Take From UK | Firstpost America
The government of Rwanda has said that it cannot guarantee how many illegal migrants it will take as part of UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's deportation scheme. The two countries signed the deportation deal in 2022, which was passed and signed into law last month. Britain has some 52,000 asylum seekers who are eligible to be sent to Rwanda. However, the East African country says it cannot give assurances that it will accept all the migrants, instead the number could be just in "thousands". The Rwanda scheme involves deporting people who come to the UK via irregular routes. They would be sent to the African nation, where they could seek asylum and gain the status of a refugee. Rwanda has already set up a facility that can accommodate up to 200 migrants. Meanwhile, Sunak has said that the first flight to Rwanda will depart in 10 to 12 weeks.
