I met Weird Al after one of his concerts. He was giving out free autographs and he let his fans walk right up to him in line. When I told him that my dad has been a fan since he was a kid and I have been a fan since I was a kid too, he said "Thanks so much". Just him saying that made me so happy. He was so nice and genuine. He's a good guy.

It's kind of upsetting to hear that people associated his music with a lot of the profane and racist parodies of songs that have been made. Al's parodies have always been unique in that they were never vulgar or overtly offensive. It was good, clean comedy that still managed to be hilarious. Al is a legend.

Weird Al helped me get through my childhood. I was raised in an apocalypse cult, and they were super strict about music, movies, any media really. Because Weird Al was funny and didn't swear, i was allowed to listen to his music. He helped me stay aware of both cultural attitudes and trends through the content of his music, and brought modern music into my home so that i knew what the music others were listening to sounded like. It made me laugh and made me feel less alone. Thank you, Weird Al.

@@lordhendrickson8585 If you ask my parents, we were just a church that was really into Doomsday prepping, purity culture, antigovernment and guns, homeschooling, patriarchal households, not using birth control, and antivaccine conspiracies. If you ask me, I’d point out that even though we had finally broken away by then, the first time I got my period, my dad started asking men twice my age if they’d marry me. He even told me “old enough to bleed, old enough to breed.” He was so programmed, that even being out of that environment, he couldn’t switch it off. We didn’t have uniforms or live on a compound (although that was the eventual plan), but the indoctrination and control was heavy. I knew girls who were born at home without birth certificates or SS cards, so they would be dependent on their fathers and eventually, their husbands. The thing is, people assume cults wind up on the news. Most people are pretty dumb. You know the statistic about how half of people are lower than the average intelligence? That’s true for general competency as well, if we could measure it statistically. I got lucky that the church was full of incompetent chucklefucks. The best cult to be raised in is one that doesn’t make the news. On the other hand, it’s probably also the worst, if they’re so competent that they are never found out. They were bad at organizing and after the big world ending technology failure and subsequent nuking (don’t know why bombs would go of, but I was a kid) of Y2K didn’t happen, some remained. Some left. Some didn’t know what to do with themselves. We stuck around a few years until my dad decided to pick another hyper-conservative church. Less cult-ish in that we looked more like mainstream people, some women even wore pants. Also, they weren’t big on the child marriage. My dad had to pretend it was a joke, that he was just joshing them about giving me away to grown men. I don’t speak to him anymore. But seriously, I was a child when the world didn’t end, and a tween when we finally left that environment, and it wasn’t until I was 20 and in a community college, having finally escaped, that I even started learning about the internet. However, Weird Al was strangely a constant in my life. His music was a rare treat of modern culture dubbed acceptable, and it fueled me through it all. Thank you for asking.

Probably chatted with him for about 15 minutes, and the manager at FYE brought out a 12x12 (record size) promotional poster of Al’s latest album to have signed for me. I proudly display it to this day.

My good buddy was the lighting designer on one of his tours. Typically the talent goes off to do their own thing in their downtime but Al genuinely enjoyed the company of his crew and would hang out and eat meals with them more than anything else. He's just a really sweet, nerdy, good hearted man who never let his success change him. He just does his thing and is thrilled it makes people happy.

I'm from the states (new england) but my dad has always been super into our Scottish heritage and a friend of mine from high-school played the pipes, he even went to school about it in Canada somewhere. This man played an integral part of my childhood. Al made the first music I ever sought out to listen to, and the first musician I was a fan of. Back in 2010-11, I went to a concert of his in Worcester MA with my father and needless to say I was starstruck. I still have all seasons of the Weird Al Show on DVD. After the concert, me, my sister and father went behind the venue with other attendees to his trailer for an autograph. I was first in line and he gave me a hug :) One of my happiest memories of my childhood.
