Nice one Graeme. I used to use the old black plastic floats with the nice bright red tip lights, that took 2 tiny circular batteries, during the 80's and 90's. I probably still have them somewhere. They were so exciting to watch, at night when it is pitch black and you have two bright red dots in front of you and they disappear under. They even moved if a mosquito landed on them. This video takes me back to those late summer nights on stillwaters.

In terms of senses the wels catfish is extremely well equipped. They have the largest amount of taste receptors of any animal known to science with well over 250,000 present on a juvenile, not only are they in the mouth, gills and on the barbels (whiskers) but their entire body is coated with taste receptors so when you're holding one it can quite literally taste your hands, a catfish is basically a big tongue. The barbels are sort of like extended probes for detecting chemical and electrical impulses given off by active and inactive food sources hiding within weed and sediment, they're used sort of like you'd use your hands for reaching down the back of the sofa to retrieve some coins. They've got an equally well developed sense of smell as well capable of detecting 1 part chemical in 10 billion parts water of certain compounds, a lot of people think that a stinky bait is the key to attracting cats but unfortunately it's a little bit more complicated in the sense that what smells strong to us in air might not be detectable at all in water. While their eyes certainly aren't their primary means for detecting food they're far from blind and unlike a lot of fish they possess what is called a tapetum lucidum which is a reflective layer within the eye used to maximise light availability at night, this is the same thing that you see reflecting light back at you when you shine a torch on a cat or other nocturnal predator in the dark. They have excellent hearing thanks to an arrangement of small bones connecting the ear canals to the swim bladder called a weberian apparatus, this means that the swim bladder acts sort of like a drum amplifying any vibrations in the environment. Like most fish they've got the sensory apparatus known as the lateral line which detects minute pressure changes in the water surrounding the fish, every time a fish moves it causes pressure changes in the water around it and by sensing these changes they can both detect other lifeforms and the shape of the surrounding environment, it's sort of like passive sonar in a submarine. The final sense possessed by a catfish is electroreception, they have tiny clusters of cells across their entire body which are stimulated by the electrical signals produced by all living organisms, these cells on the body are thought to be mainly a defensive system for detecting any predators sneaking up on them but they have a far higher density of these receptors on the front of the head used mainly for hunting. This form of detection is also common in many species of sharks as it allows them to track down prey hiding amongst rocks and coral or hiding under sand.

On the theory of fish being attracted to that red float..... I notice the fish in my aquarium all crowd round the thermostat heater LED when the main lights switch off in the evening. I think they're inquisitive. All that movement of small fish would definitely attract a predator out in the wild.

Those floats work on the water completing a circuit of the battery to light up the led inside. It shouldn't matter if the tabs on the middle are bent out or up or down so long as water can touch them. I have similar ones for deep sea fishing that blink when they are in the water & stop when they are out of the water.

@@TAFishing As long as your catching and enjoying your fishing 👍 that’s what it’s all about. Watercraft is more important than fancy kit. I fished a match on a small lake once and a guy turned up after the match fishermen had drawn their pegs and asked if he could pleasure fish one of the empty pegs. He had a 6ft rod and all his fishing kit was carried in a carrier bag . 🤔Okay I said as long as you’re quiet , a few snigger’s and comments from some of the match fishermen regarding the guys kit as he walked up the bank and chose his peg. The match whistle sounded and we (the match men started fishing . Well it was winter and hard going odd fish being caught here and there a real struggle 🙄. Then the guy started to fish with his 6ft rod and straight away he was into quality tench and carp one after another 😄 he just couldn’t go wrong 😳. The match was so slow we were all watching him, 🙄 fish after fish . Moaning from some of the match men, who let him fish!! it’s not right ! 🙄 he’s caught more than all of us combined 🤨 Well after a long fish-less 2 hrs for me , the guy packs up his shopping bag and comes walking down the bank past me

I had a float like that years ago. I believe they work by it being an open circuit, and the conductivity water completes the connection. As soon as you took it out of the water the light went off. Back in the water, light back on again. A clever and yet simple design.

It doesn't really matter what angle the wires on the sides of the float are. The circuit inside is looking for a drop in resistance (caused by immersion ot to a lesser extent by handling) between the wires which then switches the small LED in the tip. I assume the sealing tape wrapped around the electrodes is to stop the light switching on inadvertantly by handling or damp storage.

Excellent video. I always use lighted floats, or 'Tinkerbells' as we call them, for night fishing for any species. What's a p.i.a. about some of them is the light blinks and lemme just say, that plays havoc with your night vision. Easy fix though, either replace the bulb with a non blinker or if there is a flashing circuit, disconnect it. Question: do you ever use the red and white ball type floats? If so, what is your opinion of them compared to the type you use? That's all I use unless it is a Tinkerbell. They are usually clear. Another night fishing tip is, depending on where I am fishing. Sometimes I will elasticated one of those tiny light sticks to the tip of my rod so I know where the tip is. Helps out if I am in a spot with low hanging branches. As far as the light attracting the fish.....most definately. When me and one of my fishing buddies go out at night on a local lake, he will sometimes take a 4 or 6 inch light stick and suspend it about 12 inches off a rock and drop it in the water. It seems to increase the number of fish we catch. Personally, I don't like doing this as it kind of takes the sport out of it. Thank you again and we shall...see you in the next ome.

I don't use the Catfish hooks except for Blue Sharks,Tope and Conger eel .Size 2 freshwater hook, wide gape is about all I use ,and in the UK that has managed Catfish to 50lbs..If you go abroad then you will want a bigger hook ,but a lot of the guiding services provide the tackle anyway. Up to you what you use,but that's all I use...

Just did some searching on the old interwebs and found the floats on a well known internet auction site for a fiver for 5 floats

£1 each ??? That would be worth it for just one Catfish in the net....

Your thumbnail at first glance looks like a hypodermic needle, I don’t know how the bots will see it but they might flag it because of that but I don’t know.
