Today I review (experience??) a McDonald's Filet-O-Fish.
Has Canned Fish Files jumped the shark? Do they even put shark in tins? Hmm.

I've never seen sadder looking Filet of Fishes and I've been a fan for decades. They never stay in the box long enough to look soggy, freshly made with black coffee on a cold day... one of life's great pleasures.

I grew up right next to the McDonald's where the Filet of Fish was invented. Within 5 miles of it there about 8 Catholic churches. The owner was tired of seeing his business drop during Lent, so he came up with the sandwich and started serving it.

Filet O Fish is a minced patty of Alaskan pollock in the US. Most are made in my hometown of Gloucester, MA by Gorton's. I can attest that the quality standards and incredibly high for the fish patty - its not frankenfish, it's basically a big square fish stick deep fried. I love them but I wish they could actually line up the cheese -tartar sauce- bun. Every time I get one it looks like they had them stacked and someone knocked them over and put them back without telling anyone.

@@djjackson-pickett7558 Take a nice piece of cod from a fish and chips, but it was coated in breadcrumbs instead of batter, a nice solid piece with a meaty chew. Slather it in proper tarter sauce made with real mayo and chopped pickles. Add a slice of American cheese, serve in a steamed soft fluffy bun. Wait thirty years. Replace the nice piece of fish with mushy fish bits tof unknown origin. Replace the tarter sauce with oily slimy vegetable oil paste and vinegar. Shrink 25%. Charge 5x.

You HAVE to have an order of fries to dip into the copious amounts of "tartar sauce". Also, if you want a fresh Filet-O-Fish, order it special. Like, have extra cheese, extra sauce, or what I do, is have them add some lettuce. They have to make it fresh when you do that instead of grabbing one of the pre-fabs they have sitting under the heater.

I tried that and they told me they dont do special orders on filet o fish - they make it one way and thats it. They also told me they dont put cheese on it. I stopped visiting that location after that.

The McDonalds near me doesn't have any fillets on the heater because I think they go entire days without people ordering it. Every time I order two, they kick me out of the drive-thru line and send me to their pickup spot. They're not fantastic even fresh though.

When in development, the chef came up with the notion of adding cheese. Cheese on fish was not and is not a thing. They compromised by going with half a slice. At least that's what I have read. I love them BTW.

IMO McDonald's is not nearly as good as it was when I was a kid. The Fillet O Fish is the only thing I still like on their menu. I hope that Arby's brings back their King's Hawaiian Fish sandwich during lent this year. That's a fantastic sandwich. Great video. 👍

The Filet-O-Fish was invented right here in my town! And yes, I agree with you they just aren't the same as back in the 80's and 90's. I used to eat four of them they were so good. Today I won't even buy them unless there is a special sale.

It looks like maybe you needed some chopsticks with that mess! Lol! Thank you for being completely honest and admitting amongst the flaws you were still enjoying it! I’ve noticed they’ve started cutting corners with (not only the cheese), but the buns as well… they used to be magical, so puffy it was impossible to touch them without leaving an indent with your finger at the lightest touch, yet they were flawless somehow… now I can touch the buns, no marks… :0( But still, yes, I do still enjoy them and look forward to Lent season each year when maybe I can afford two! As someone who was raised in a family that didn't care for McDonalds; finally trying it (at 30 years old) is actually really good. I go there once a week at least, I like the McDouble with lettuce and mac sauce (no ketchup, mustard), I get two for lunch. I like the mcnuggets too, with honey mustard.

Thanks Matthew. I genuinely enjoyed this video review. The foods at McDonalds definitely have something about them that pulls you back to them all the time. It’s kind of a mild addiction to it. I could not say if it’s product quality of flavour enhancers or both but it’s there. I liked the Fishburger (Fish fillet with sauce and salad in a bun) a lot more than Fillet o fish, but unfortunately they stopped producing them some time back.

1:40 I judge the quality of any McDonald's I go to by the ability of the employee to reasonable get the cheese within the sandwich on the filet o fish. On the other hand, I remember back in highschool having a fondness for the "McSurf N Turf", a special order abomination of a Big Mac with the middle bun removed and replaced with the fish filet from the filet o fish. Good times.
