A non-aquarium strain of one of the goodieds! I know you’ve kept some of Gary Lange’s before, but it would be cool to see one of your big totes with a bunch of goodieds. If I had to choose, skiffia multipunctata or ameca splendins.

The calcium buildup on the tank lid brought back memories of happy cichlids and bringing babies to the LFS :) I had perfect malawian water chemistry before I moved south, now sitting a neutral but still relatively hard well water. My mollies are some of my friendliest and tamest fish. One of my females likes to swim in and out of my hand if I put my hand in the tank. She genuinely seems to like it, I just hold my hand still and she'll swim into and out of my hand over and over. Feeding time is obviously also a crazy frenzy with the mollies too. It's so hard not to overfeed them because they are always begging at the glass.

Water hyacinth would be an ideal plant for the totes - especially those with green water caused by your skylights. It would also reduce nitrites . I’ve seen many outside ponds in Asia were this plant is used to help with water quality.

Re: totes/bins water temp vs room air temp. I suspect the hard floor beneath the totes (concrete with epoxy it looks like?) may possibly be acting as a giant heat sink, pulling the colder ground temps below the slab up and into the concrete itself, and subsequently into the water column. The constant of that floor temp conducting directly through the plastic and into a sizable volume of water in each tote, with the totes all touching one another (at least in their respective sections), and its resulting combined total thermal mass would mean the room air temp wouldn’t have much impact on changing the actual water temp. At all. Like ever. 😬 If you were to aim an infrared thermometer at various spots on floor near the totes, it will likely confirm one way or another if the reading is within a couple of degrees of the average water temp in the totes. If that’s the case, the way to heat the room and the totes wouldn’t be by forced air air, but instead by way of radiant floor heat installed directly into the slab - unfortunately probably not cost effective in an existing concrete slab. Though, perhaps, by lifting the totes off the floor by a couple of inches using a less conductive material such as hard rubber blocks, or 4x4 wood posts with a thin neoprene or foam insulating layer there would be enough air circulation beneath and around the water column that it makes an impact. The upside? Were the theory prove correct, if the slab maintains that constant temp year round (or near to it) and so too does the water, there may be no need to worry about cooling the room in the summer using forced air for the same reason - that same, high volume of ~70° water may result in a fairly constant water *and* air temp as well. Further, you wouldn’t have to worry as much about the tanks overheating should you lose power, as the cooler water temp would hold more oxygen for a longer period of time. All just a theory though. 👍
@wobblysauce3 жыл бұрын
With the thermal mass, it will go up/down on external factors, but it is just about watching it, as once most people realize it is normally late into the issue.

hey cory the issue your having with aquarium temps all over the place. did you set your totes directly on to the concrete with only the rooms flooring as a thermal break between tank and the geothermal properties of the ground.? As well for a room that large if you want to be able to maintain a much more consistent temp across all the tanks and ponds look into installing one radiant tube heater from the ceiling. super efficent i heat a 120'x80' pole barn in michigan all winter at 68 for less then 1200 dollars of propane. and the best part is once the tube heaters get the concrete warmed up you will experience less heat loss thru the concrete and also 1 inch rigid construction foam under those totes would help also. If you read this and are interested in some info on the radiant tube heaters im talking about i got info and a place to order them. along with i could send you some data and pics of them in my application and temp gun readings of the concrete where they are used and the concrete in my other large barn that i dont heat with them. im telling ya they are worth you looking into and in my big barn i have a 2100 gallon tank i got from a seaworld that is totally planted and my best attempt at a amazon ecosystem.and those tube heaters in my shop are 18feet in the air at the ceiling height and they keep the concrete at 65-71 and all other objects in there 72-75 including the tank. and thats great and much easier to have my tank heater only need to swing all that water an additional 3-6 degrees for 4 months then ishut it off and try to simulate changing seasons to help with breeding aggression and the over whelming rate that my geophagus and other tank mates populations have gone from some to many.
