What's in that fish food? How to understand the nutrition facts that your fish food is giving you so you can make smart choices about the food you feed your reef tank.
The US FDA or State regulations require that guaranteed analysis labels show some things (like crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, and moisture), and some companies go beyond that. In general, foods with higher levels of protein and fat will help our fish grow more and they'll have stronger immune systems. That helps them better live in the sometimes stressful environment of our reef tanks. Good quality food even helps your coral!
Freeze dried foods often have higher levels of protein compared to pellets, but they're harder to feed. Either way, feeding your fish a couple times a day is best for most species of reef or saltwater fish. Give them whatever they'll eat in a couple minutes and no more. Try to give them a varied diet, every different food they eat will have a slightly different nutritional profile - different vitamins, different minerals - and that variety ensures they get everything they need.
I feed my fish a variety of pellets and freeze dried foods, alongside frozen foods. My rotation goes through PE Pellets, Panta Rhei Sponge, AquaForest Anthias Pro Feed, TDO Chroma Boost, and Nyos Wild Goji. I also feed half a sheet of raw untoasted Nori to my tangs and angelfish, and the whole tank enjoys a mix of various varieties of Rod's Food and PE Mysis each afternoon. I also have an auto feeder full of Avast Marine's Reef Jerky freeze dried food that feeds a few times each day.

My fish love the PE pellets, it was the first type of prepared food that my lawnmower blenny started eating. I always get a laugh watching it chase the pellets, it’s very accustomed to getting its food off the rock and glass, lol.

Yea most of my fish eat them. My Copperband is the only one that won’t touch them for whatever reason.

Nice video. Did any of your reading bring up flake vs. pellet? as in if one is better nutritionally?

Not really, no. My own opinion is that pellets are probably made from higher quality stuff, but it’s impossible to really know other than what they put on the label.

@@ReefMan yeah I agree with that. I actually feed both. Along with a variety of frozen foods. I do feel the fish have a easier time eating flakes and that's a big reason as too why I feed it. I also like the idea of some pieces floating around for LPS to grab.

My pe mysis says: 69.5% min crude protein, 8.35% min crude fat, 2.75% max crude fiber, and 5.5% max ash.

I can’t really cut back on food because of my anthias, but I do a water change Monday Wednesday and Friday via my Kamoer water changer.
