Hey Capt! Nice work! I am a boatbuilder in South Florida. Just started a Channel myself. Thank you for putting out good content. There is a lot of misinformation regarding how to fiberglass. I support your cause!! I built a 23' center console called "Wicked Wanda". All Vinylester solid glass hull. The rest all Coosa similar to your build. Keep it up!!

Another great video!!! What method have you seen work the best to remove fiberglass from the skin?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Жыл бұрын
Thanks! That is a good question. I am sure you noticed that I am almost always wearing long pants, long sleeve shirts and gloves when we are working with fiberglass. That is your first layer of defense against skin contact. Once resin is on you, it is usually going to require a solvent like acetone to remove it. But using acetone directly on your skin is certainly not good for your health, and should be used very minimally in my opinion. Hope that helps, appreciate You watching!

Hi Captain Mike Do you have any more detail or content on building the boat plug and mould? Would be interested to know the technique and time to build for my own use. Great show as always
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Жыл бұрын
Regrettably, I do not have much content at all of the plug-and-mold build phases of this project. This build has been a multi-year project, and I did not have a GoPro, or a decent camera when I started. I might go back after the build is complete, and show more details of the plug and mold if there is interest. I do have a video of when I built the console and seat base. It is here on the channel It is a smaller scale, but the same basic process. Thanks for watching, Appreciate the comment!

Thanks again Capt great video ,I would like to clarify and ask a question you mentioned in the video temperatures between 50 to 70° is good for glassing i’m an amateur but in the winter, I keep my shop in about 55 when I’m glassing, I try to bump the heat up to about 60 -65, it’s kicked at the temp so I assumed I was good ?? A lot of others say it’s too cold hopefully I’m good. also, on the biax. 1708 on a radius should you try to have the biax. stitches parallel w/radius? does it matter, I’ve had some trouble w/it forming on a radius. Thanks again great job turned some friends onto your videos.
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Жыл бұрын
Glad your enjoying the videos. I probably should have said high 50s to high 70s with 70 being about perfect in my opinion. Obviously the colder it is, the higher the catalyst ratio would would be. I think 60 - 65 is just fine as long as it is curing good for you. I have not noticed they lay of the biax making much difference, but the sharpness of the radius and the brand of biax can make a difference. I have had good luck with V2 and Vector ply fabrics. A softer radius and wetting out really well with resin under the biax might help. Hope that answers your question, Thanks for watching!

I’d say mom is very proud. You guys do fantastic work. Question. I have an 88 bass boat. Do you think it coosa would be a viable and cost effective material to refloor it with and to build casting decks? I would like to do it for a permanent solution but don’t know if I should go with plywood instead.
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 10 ай бұрын
Thanks, We appreciate it! I really like the Coosa, it is lighter and stronger than plywood, plus it will never rot. The only real negative is that it costs 3 to 4 times more than marine-grade plywood. And in some parts of the country it may be harder to find a supplier. I don't have any regrets using it on our boat build. Hope this helps! Good luck with your project!

your deck cap looks great. What did you do to the underside of the stacked Coosa?
@FishBumpTV

Thanks, I primed the stacked Coosa with resin. After it had cured I used either resin or a high-strength putty and lots of screws to bond it together.

When you were applying the 1708 and chop strand did you use resin with wax in it? I'm new to this but find your videos extremely helpful. My only (minimal experience) is with Epoxy. Which begs another question, how long does epoxy hardener and resin last. Thanks, Jeff.
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Жыл бұрын
No wax, just a high-quality iso laminating resin from a company called Polynt. We source it from a company called advanced plastics. The only time we add wax to anything would be to gelcoat in the last coat. I suppose you could add wax to resin in the last coat if you knew that you needed it to be tack free so you could sand it without gumming up your sandpaper. Different materials have different shelf lives. If you keep most materials cool, and dark they will last longer. I have had some materials work with no problems up to a year after purchase, others only a month or two. Most materials will thicken, or change colors when they are going bad. I would not use it if you are in doubt. Hope that answers your question, Appreciate you watching and commenting!

When you "seal" the Coosa Board, are you using polyester laminating resin then glass with finishing resin?
@FishBumpTV

We use laminating resin for everything. If it is a compartment that will be seen we finish it with gelcoat . Thanks for watching

So am I right in understanding that the resin waterproofs the wood, and the glass is for strength? Why then do you glass over the really strong wood parts of the boat? Why not just resin them and call it a day?

Hey captain can 1708 be glass shiny side down on coosa for a RV bath tub that I’m building? Thinking on a single layer and having the Mat side up for a smoother finish.. thanks!
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 5 ай бұрын
No,you should not apply 1708 upside down. The csm or mat that is sown into the bottom is better at initial bonding. If you want the cosmetics of csm, you should buy some 1 Oz csm and laminate it over the 1708. That way you have the best possible bond, and the nice cosmic, and remember that csm does not work well with epoxy resin. You should use a quality polyester or vinyl Ester laminating resin. Thanks for watching!

Any issue with me using resin dye vs buying that specific one? Its hard to find the awesome stuff out here in hawaii
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Жыл бұрын
I don't think You will have any problems using a different dye, as long as it's made for the same general application. Whenever I try something new, I like to make a test panel or batch. Make sure everything looks and works good before using it on something really important. Good luck with your project, and thanks for watching!

@Fish Bump TV Thanks, it would be the same resin dyes i use to color my casting resin, for trolling lures,i think they're alcohol inks? I just assumed the red catalyst was the slow hardener that we cant get out here

Could you use a router and radius bit on fiberglass?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Жыл бұрын
Fiberglass is really tough on router bits. Not saying it won't work, but you probably wouldn't want to do much of it. I prefer a sander or grinder with 36 grit for the initial cut, then down to 80 grit on an orbital sander for the final cut. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching and commenting!
