As someone who has just bought a small, 48-year old fibreglass boat in need of substantial refurbishment, I cannot tell you how pleased I am to have found your channel (and I’ve been sifting through a lot of YT videos about fibreglass). Your videos are truly exceptional; tangible, useable information about the techniques and products used, and shown in detail. Thank you for not skimping or cutting things out in the edit, this is terrific information, and I’m much obliged. Cheers!

I'm here to stay on this channel, this format is spot on. Long and show every step missing nothing, full sends to pro level out the gate. I've watched thousands of yacht/boat repair videos, but they always leave you needing to fill in the pieces somewhere along the line, to the point you aren't confident you know everything you need to give it a go. Your videos crush it and make me want to give it a go now, awesome job dude!

Now I know what I’m paying for , and what I can do, if I have time. Thank you for the detailed explanation of this process. I hope you continue sharing your knowledge of your profession. Hello Joe , this is Jaime from J A Fiberglass in Gilbert , AZ , it is amazing to see somebody repairing gel coat the same way as i do from the wood blocks to the masking around the repairs , i generally do add cabosil to thicken the gel coat on the first fill especially if its deep cause like you know time is money. i like to finish the repairs with 1200 paper , i find that works for me on white or light colored repairs , if its a black or dark repair i will work up to 2000 and i use the 3M Hi gloss white white with my rotary buffer , start out with a low setting and finish with a like a four setting on the buffer and that takes all the scratches out and gives it a super high close , wipe it down good and i apply my favorite wax , which is the Collinite marine paste wax. Great to see this video, your spot on and people will get good results if they follow your advice, good luck fishing.

Hi Jaime, Glad you enjoyed the video! I agree that adding cabosil can be very helpful, especially with deeper scratches and dings. I have a couple more gelcoat repair videos on the channels where we show that process. The damage on this boat was on the edge between thickened and non thickened gel in my opinion. So I went with non thickened just to show some of the DIYers out there how it could still be done even if you didn't have any cabosil. But that is a good point! Sounds like we are on the same gel coat repair program overall. It is always good to hear from another professional, and get there feedback! I feel like there is always something to be learned from other craftsmen, and I try to have a open mind about different styles and techniques. I appreciate you watching, and your positive Comments! Please feel free to let me know if you have any suggestions for content on the channel, I would like to hear your thoughts! Thanks so much!

Been viewing your videos. Just so informative and super detailed. Luv your videos so much about repair and gel coating. I watched your videos numerous times to get confidence. Then purchased (approx: $800 since Qrt Spectrum Atrlantic Blue for $360) a bunch of materials and equipment to complete a DIY. Two months ago we had a minor stupid accident docking my Cobia 237 due to high wind and turbulent water. To keep it short, the above water line bow keel hit the upper edge of the concrete barrier. It ruptured the glass and gelcoat with a hole thru and bunch of port and starboard gouges and scratches. To sum it up.....ugly. Since the damages are above the water line, I believe you can consider it cosmetic but still ugly. Thank so much for your videos, I was able to fix everything and able to do trial an error (perhaps doing it close to 10 times) lots of practice for over a month due to weather (rain and wind conditions). Results: color matching not perfect, but hard to notice. I was able to feather and gel coating came out really nice. I still think it is achievable for my DIY to make it close to a professional job, thank you so again for your mentoring. You are the best!

Great video, very informative! Just remember that if you flip your gloves inside out for re use, the oils from your hand is on the outside of your gloves.
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 4 ай бұрын
Thanks! Yes, I agree completely. In the video I had to take a new glove off to work with some masking tape for just a moment. The glove turned inside out as I took it off my hand. I turned the inside of the glove back to the inside rather than throw it away. I would never recommend wearing the glove in reverse after using it, that would defeat all of the wipe down and prep work we did to the surface. I hope this clarifies what I was suggesting. I appreciate you watching and commenting

If you're going to do a job, it's better to do it right - 100% true, my friend.. And you can't beat doing things by hand a machine removes you from the work, where by hand really allows you to "feel" your way. I disagree that if it's just a repair to a functional thing you may leave it there - you'll always be seeing that repair - all comes back to doing it right. Feathering is absolutely vital, producing invisible repairs.. Putting 2 halves of a canoe together by drilling and stitching, yeah I drill with a machine. But once the job is done and the inside fibreglassed and gelled, stitches removed, I would use a rose on a drill to get that 45° feather - I would still go in and feather further. All sanding and polishing by hand, the machine only returning for the last polish and wax. Great job and great video.. Job done..

Also the blue tape is magic stuff.. I used to skimp out on cheap masking tape and all the issues along with it, but blue tape? I'd never go back..

great video, I usually add cabosil to thicken the gel coat and do my fairing work then spray the final gelcoat, I like your tape method to get the gelcoat higher than the repair and smooth, I'm going to try it on my next repair. keep these technical videos coming they are great.

Thanks! The way you are doing your repairs is a solid method as well. I wanted to show different ways it can be done and still get a quality repair. Also thought some of the people interested might not have a spray gun. Glad you liked the taping method, it is a good option to have in your bag of tricks. Maybe I will do a repair with cabosil and a spray gun in a future video. Thanks for watching and commenting! It really helps the channel
