Outstanding, I'm glad to hear that the channel has been helpful with your transom and stringer replacement! We just don't see many boats in our area with metal flake, but i know that it is very popular. I will try to get something out along those lines in the future for you all. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I have used Gel-coat(wax added) on a sailboat for added footing. then added Beach sand, then a few hours later added more gel-coat. This process works well and actually looks good for a few years. I always mask a pattern as you did. Beach sand has been my Go-to additive for non-skid for over 50 years, both in paint and gel-coat------Mikey

I painted a utility trailer that way. 3 coat of outdoor paint with masonry sand and 2 coat of paint without. Been there for 3 years now in direct sun no issues. Just remember using sand it will sink to the bottom after a few minutes so keep it stirred to get a good mixture.

So you added waxed gel coat on top of tacky waxed gel coat and no issue?

Great job . I always thought non skid gets very dirty and hard to clean but going over the non skid with gel coat is genius! But does it make more slippery with the shine ? Cheers

Great timing! I am taping off the deck of my boat today to spray gelcoat and nonskid this week. I plan to spray a base layer of gelcoat. Then several hours later, tape off the pattern for the nonskid, spray another coat with nonskid mixed in, pull the tape off and spray the final coat of gelcoat with Duratec mixed in it. Hopefully the weather cooperates and all goes well, lol.

Love your channel. I found you while looking for ways to shave some weight on my Jeep. I have some tube half doors that have heavy steel panels. I believe I can reduce the weight of the doors by 75% by replacing the panels with fiberglass skins. Watching you I have confidence that I can get a decent result and shave some weight. I’ve used all your links and purchased enough product to make 4 door skins using inner and outer layers of CSM and 2 layers of 1708 in the middle. I plan on gel coating the outside. Thanks for your wisdom!

Much appreciated, Joe. I'm busy with what you guys call a shallow or skinny water micro skiff and would like to make my own access hatches (rather than buying plastic ones). If you can get something like that out, that would be awesome.

Love this! If you were copying a hatch from a mold would you add nonskid as your first layer in the mold? Or make the hatch and then add the nonskid layer as you just showed once it’s made and out of the mold?

Joe, have you ever considered, instead of using non-skid gelcoat, some mats, with textured surface, to be glued and painted? Like made of PVC, or other resistant material?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV Күн бұрын
I have seen rubber or synthetic work mats used in certain areas on work boats before. It's not super common, but I have seen it. I would imagine that some experimenting and testing the concept in your application could be done. There is also a company called Sea Deck, and others like sea deck, that make something like you are describing, specifically for boats. You may want to check into that.I tend to stay with the more tried and true methods for the most part, and the gelcoat with non-skid has worked very well for me. I hope this helps, and I appreciate you watching and commenting!

Great content. When you catalyzed the gel coat with the clear additive, did you add additional MEKP or did you catalyze for the amount of gel coat only?

What a great video. Always learn something new. Could you possibly show us how to make a mold from a textured panel, say diamond plate or some other kind of mold that would be non skid.
@scottcraven9763
@scottcraven9763 23 сағат бұрын
You say I can add this texture over my molded surface? Interesting. I thought I would need to smooth out that first. What a relief. I have an older Century 2400 that I use for commercial King Mackerel fishing and had to have some repairs done. Cut the floor out to repair the gas tank and the work looks awful. I would like to take on the task to make it look better and have been dreading sanding it down. I try to watch all your videos to prepare myself for the time I can actually start. Thanks for all the information. Keep it up

Hi Captain Joe! Is there any way to match a factory non-skid pattern that is embossed into the gel coat? I have the typical tiny diamond pattern as found on nearly every sailboat from the 70's and 80's. Is there a way to create a pattern/mold from a good section and somehow match it up with the worn out area? I have never actually seen it done but if anyone could do I am sure it would be you! :) Thank you for more outstanding informative youtube content! Take care and all the best from California!🧡

Would you recommend a two-component paint-based solution or gel coat process to apply nonskid to an aluminum surface?
@marshallbrodie9974
@marshallbrodie9974 Күн бұрын
This is from a guy that is spraying gelcoat this week to my fiberglass deck, but I would say that for aluminum, a two-part paint is the way to go. It is very important to use the correct primers when painting aluminum. I'm not sure that gelcoat would have lasting adhesion to aluminum. A two-part paint system is proven to hold up on aluminum.

I have a question on gelcoat, this isnt relative to this video but i figured id stand the best chance to get a reply on your latest video. Im looking to thicken some color matched gelcoat i have to do a repair. Ive seen you use west systems 406 to thicken before. I have some west systems 404 that i use for epoxy but i cant figure out if it is the same stuff. Do you think it would work as a filler to thicken gelcoat?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 19 минут бұрын
The 404 is a high-quality density adhesive filler. It's meant more for bonding and gluing, I have never heard of it being used to thicken gelcoat, As a filler. The 406 is best suited for thickening gelcoat in my opinion. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!

Thinking outside the box , say one wanted to have shiny gloss on both sides, I wonder if that mirror could be coated with release wax and then placed on top of your last coat of gelcoat shiny side down

In this episode proven methods of controlling deformation was combined with payload along with applications of the principles, practices, and techniques were solidified. The concrete in the shop is the best material choice because it's properties are acceptable along with reduced as density and cost over steel. A wood floor cannot withstand this environment. This said, we have achieved the needed strengths, environment compatibility and adequate friction while maintaining payload and or relative performance.
