Excellent video as always, they just keep getting better and better. Those are great gems that you give out, learning about what happens if your first layer cures to slowly is priceless information you couldn't find anywhere else. It's not always knowing how to do something that's important but also what not to do or what can happen, those can sometime be more important. You always try to cover everything and it's great learning. Thank you.

Hi Joe nice panel. Can you please do a little follow up after full cure and show the stiffness. I think that was a total of 3x csm and 2x 1708. I think that should be pretty tough as you said but it would be good to see what kind of flex you have on that. Thanks for your great content.

Excellent content as always Captain Joe! One thing I might add that I found out concerning MEKP is that one will pay an arm and a leg in shipping for it in most sizes above 2 ounces due to its hazardous carrying or shipping nature. If one wants 8ozs to a gallon, finding a local boatyard or chemical supplier is paramount for cost.

For my sailboat I wanted to raise the chainplate penetrations above deck level slightly so I made a plug, then a mold and finally some “biscuits” about 4” x 4” x 5/16” thick, gelcoat on the exterior, bullnose edges all around. I didn’t spend much time on the mold finish because the parts were easy to sand after demoulding. I drilled and cut slots for the chainplates to pass through with about 1/16” clearance all around. I’ll epoxy these to the deck before reinstalling and sealing the chainplates and the stainless steel trim covers. Now water running over the deck will have less chance to get to that vulnerable sealant joint at the penetration, and I think it will look good too. Thanks to your demonstrations I had a pretty clear idea of how to accomplish the job.

This was another excellent Fish Bump video but I came here to chuckle over the same point ❤. The cheat sheet seems to be universal here in the States when going all metric would make it completely unnecessary. That said, I use feet and inches, gallons and quarts, all the time in some contexts but I tend to go metric whenever precision or calculations are required. It’s a muddled world we live in 😊.

Interesting video as always! Great work! I think I noticed though that there was some chips in the gelcoat that still sticked to the mirror. Wouldn't it be a great opportunity to use that and show how to repair a surface gelcoat damage? Maybe from hitting a small rock when beaching for a day on the beach or hitting a sharp corner on the trailer when picking the boat out of the water.

My takeaway is that in between separate layups the addition of CSM creates a superior bond. Also, the CSM can be placed as the final layer if desired for various reasons. Another great video. I’m thinking how one could make a cored panel using this method, two such panels sandwiching the core with gelcoat moulded on both panels . Also combining your grp and gelcoat on ply videos, am wondering if you would ever use peel ply on the last glass layer before the gelcoat layer to flatten off / smooth the Csm layer before the gelcoat

question: First off, your channel is awesome! now the question. If a smooth mirror finish and gelcoat is not necessary. Would it be possible to tape peel ply down on a flat surface, then build the panel on top of the peel ply and then finish it with peel ply on top sandwiching the panel in the peel ply? Seems if this is possible, once the peel ply is pulled off each side, the surface would be easy to finish as needed at a later date.

Excellent video, thanks. I build a mold out of cement boarding then covered it in packing tape it was for a water tank it did the job but I wasn't very happy as it was a beast get it out of the mold as some of the resin managed to get past the tape and have a reaction with the cement board?
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 7 күн бұрын
Thanks!! I have never tried to use cement board as the form for a mold before. I know that the clear tape needs a flat, relatively smooth, and dust free surface for it to stick properly. I wonder if the tape didn't stick well to the cement board, possibly allowing resin in?I also used mold release wax in the video over the tape as extra insurance against the fiberglass sticking to the form. If you didn't use wax, that could have made a difference. Every step in the process is important, and sometimes, any difference in what I show in the video will have some effect on the outcome. I hope this helps, and I wish you all the best with your future projects!

@FishBumpTV

You are very welcome! There are lots of options for making an unsinkable cored panel. You could use Coosa board, Divinycell, Airex. I'm sure if you scroll back through our video library, you will find it, and other helpful videos. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I have never tried to build a clear panel, but I think it could be done with the right combination of materials. I hope this helps, and I appreciate you watching!

Thanks for the excellent tips and tricks. Regarding temperature for poly resin, any tips for those of us in the mid-Atlantic who don’t have 70F during the winter for boat repair? Do we mix at much higher catalyst or just wait longer for cure? Will it cure over a week at 50F?

If I need to make a curved panel that measures 18" across the diameter, (imagine taking an 18" sonotube and cutting it in half lengthwise) would I be able to use this technique and then bend the piece to the curve, or would i need to make a mold?

Hi Joe I like watching your videos Im in the process now building a boat for myself. Me and my brother have been in the boat building for years. Im interested in knowing where can I purchase the non skid panel you showed in this video. Also the material you used at the end and then peeled it of afterwards Im in Roatan, Honduras
@FishBumpTV

I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying our videos! The company that makes the non-skid is called Gibco, and they call it flexmold. The other blue material is called peel-ply. I source the peel-ply and most of my resins and fiberglass supplies from Fiberglass warehouse. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching all of the way from Honduras!

Thanks Joe, I’ve used the same process using Melamine covered particle board to make test panels for my overland campers habitat. I’m getting closer to building the box, but I don’t know how to make the seams disappear in the final product. My largest panel will be 8’x18.5, so the mold will be built with 5 sheets of 4x8 plywood with 4 seams. I guess I can putty the seam with Bondo the best I can and plan to sand the entire panel after it’s been de molded to get a consistent product. Do you have any other ideas?

Joe would love to see a video working with nonskid. For example I need to duplicate a broken hatch and it has a non skid surface in the center. Would you put something like soft sand as your initial layer in a mold? How would you get the smooth border

Hi Capt Joe, enjoyed as always. If I made big enough panels could I use for flooring on my boat build? Instead of ply or thermolite(coosa).
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 3 күн бұрын
Yes, you could theoretically, but the panel would need to be quite thick to be stiff enough for a floor panel. I don't know that it would be the most effective use of time and materials to do it that way. I have a follow-up video coming out this weekend that will help show the difference in a cored vs non-cored panel. I think you will find it helpful and interesting. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!

Hi Joe, I have an old Hoby Cat with a broken rudder ( I still have 1 good one)! Should I lay up a thick blank and grind it to shape or make a mold and lay one up in a mold or perhaps make a plywood one and laminate on top of it with glass? Thanks!
@FishBumpTV
@FishBumpTV 5 күн бұрын
It could possibly be done in any one of those three ways, and there are pros and cons to each. I wonder if you have considered using a piece of 26 pound density Coosa board instead of plywood for the core. It is very strong,light weight, rot proof, and can be sanded and shaped easily. Then wrap it in fiberglass. I believe Boat Outfitters will sell smaller pieces, so you don't have to buy a full sheet. I have several Coosa board related videos that might help give you some inspiration. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

You should show what happens if you allow a larger amount of resin to generate heat in the cup and cure. I think it will drive the point home and possibly save someone from a devastating accident.

I see cruisers building with foam board panels and they route the edges hollow and fill the edges with glass cloth. It seems there is a faster way to create the cloth. They lay the cloth flat then they wet the cloth with resin and roll it up before they pack it into the edges of the panels. If they used Basalt rope and soaked it with resin it would be faster than rolling cloth. The Basalt rope would cost more but they don't need much to go around the edges. Basalt is stronger than fiberglass and more impact-resistant. Sunlight does not ever damage Basalt thread, cloth, rope, or reinforcement rods for concrete. Saltwater-penetrating concrete cannot cause these rods to corrode and swell. On straight runs, these reinforcing rods could strengthen edges. Basalt staples could be used for curves or corners. The staples could mix with resin and be packed into panel edges to complete the whole process.

Can you talk about resins for below the waterline vs above? In my case specifically, it would be with Gelcoat finish. The information out there is confusing as to whether or not Polyester is okay for below the waterline, but I've also seen reference to Vinyl resin not being compatible for under the waterline. Regarding ISO Polyester, could that be used below waterline whereas regular Polyester could not? I do understand Epoxy can be used below the waterline but seems not to work well for Gelcoat finish. It's confusing. Thanks for another great vid!

Would it work with epoxy resin or it is not recommended bc not compatible with gel coat or it would shrink? I want to make a hard top shell for a van roof.
@FiberglassWarehouse
@FiberglassWarehouse 6 күн бұрын
Gel coat and epoxy are not compatible. If you want to use gel coat, I suggest using vinyl ester resin (think of it as epoxy dissolved in styrene). If you need to use epoxy, you will need to paint the shell after you pop it off the mold.

Clarify please, put the release wax on. Let it haze over. Then be sure to get all of the wax off? Why bother putting the wax on in the first place? And, isn't glass already non-porus, making the resin not stick to it? Obviously not, if you are telling me to put wax on, but it sure seems like fiberglass shouldn't stick to glass. As always, thank you for taking the time to do these videos.
