The Government of Guyana envisions the “Guyana Green State Development Strategy”, which marks a new beginning for Guyana. It will lay the foundation for inclusive green economic growth, for achieving sustainable development targets, and for providing a long-term vision for a prosperous and equitable future. The strategy aims to reorient and diversify Guyana’s economy to reduce reliance on traditional sectors and open up new income and investment opportunities in higher value adding and higher growth sectors. Guyana has embraced sustainable development, and is a pathfinder for a “Green State”, which could be a new model to achieve sustainable development. Guyana as a ‘Green State’ recognizes the value of international environmental agreements, protects regional geologic and geographic features, while sustaining the national economic prosperity, environmental security and social wellbeing for all citizens.
The GSDS will emphasize two core strategic areas, namely (1) Coastal Ecosystem Services, and (2) Fisheries Management.
Regarding ‘Fisheries Management’, Guyana experiences increasing pressures associated with the extraction of marine resources and associated fishing patterns. There is therefore a need to look into available fish populations and extraction limits.
It is hoped that the production of public service announcement for the ‘Learning Channel’ and the ‘National Communications Network’ on the protection and sustainable use of coastal and marine resources will assist in the ‘Sustainable Management of Natural Resources’ in Guyana.
