Met up with a fellow fisherman in Monterey at Coast Guard Pier. I've heard of rockfish, cabezon and lingcod being caught from there. Not much luck for us today!

it's not always that bad, first time I went there I caught some easy 10-12 inch surfperches on shrimp right away. I let most of them go but I saw a kid catch like a 15 incher as I was packing up

That's the local spot, cool to see two KZbinrs there at the same time fishermans life and Central coast bassin. Much Love keep those lines tight.

FYI @ 2:25 Blacksmith, they are one of the most tolerant members of the Damselfish family.

Wow. I've been to the Coast Guard Pier/Jetty and, from the beach, I climbed onto the rocks to poke pole. Only tiny fish; I didn't time the tides right. And the perch? I don't know, it looks like maybe a seaperch and a carp crossbreed, which would probably never happen in the wild.

lolol... at 2:15 it looks like youre just standing there staring and reading that yellow sign.

The kelp along the jetty is a nursery. If you want to catch bigger you have to get a kayak and go to them.

That fish is a blacksmith! I can’t believe I am watching 5 year old videos on your channel …lol
@Doomzday578 жыл бұрын
The small fishes you were throwing back, you could have used for live bait... to catch cabezon or lingcod. You also could have gone to Pacific Grove/Lover's Point area... along the rocks. Some good poke poling spots there, as well. Anyways, cool video!

The fishing at Cgp has really tapered off the last couple years. Mostly smaller grade fish with a lot of perch and opal eye that might be state record size... That fish you and central coast bass thought was a perch is a smaller opal eye.

Yeah I never fish the coast guard pier anymore... I'll head more toward Pacific grove/Carmel area. Even big sur if you're up for a hike and some climbing.
@bradhamilton41608 жыл бұрын
You gotta go about a mile off shore either underwater or by kayak to catch any good fish in monterey otherwise with just pierfishing your chances of catching anything substantial is less than 5%.
@skylerburson54028 жыл бұрын
I fished around that area with plastics from a kayak last year for nada. Think the sea lions have put in big dent in the large fish population around there..
@travisl66546 жыл бұрын
I know you don't need a fishing license on the pier but if you actually step off the pier but remain within the Coast Guard area will you need a license?

If you ever wanna catch some real fish in monterey off the rocks let me know! lol thats legit. Coast guard pier kinda sucks though.

Hey Matts, squid or anchovies is usually the best bait on shore here in Monterey. The coast guard pier usually only has small fish. occasionally someone will get a big fish. Those are not perch. They are called Blacksmith. Not worth eating. Fishing is better from a boat or kayak. Too many fishermen from shore. It would be fun to fish with you sometime! Take it easy! Keith
@FishermansLife8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Keith! I think I'll use squid or anchovies next time I'm by those rocks. Too kelpy for swimbaits or jigs
@squidfisher998 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the Coast Guard pier is too snaggy for artificial lures. I am surprised that they didn't work down the coast in Big Sur. Pacific Grove has some good spots too.
