You must be a snagger I mean flosser... don't be mad we float guys catch 98% of the fish because we get them to bite and can keep fishing the same hole instead of hooking a fish in the back and spook the rest. Not to mention how many flossers just take the illegally hooked fish and think it's fine. Their not sportsman.

Don’t wanna spread hate in this awesome channel, but like fray said, these are undeniable bites. They grab these eggs, you can argue it’s out of aggression or biological instinct to eliminate competition, but they eat and there’s nothing else to it. Good luck 👍🏻

The people who say you can't get Salmon to bite in the rivers haven't even tried. They probably skip right to snagging.

I'd agree. If you are used to snagging you probably don't have the patience to drift a legitimate rig for long, and thats why people go right back to the old ways..

Another well put educational video, Fray. Loved your message at the beginning of the video and I can relate to everything you said. I also do well on skein and sometime spinners and crank baits for these salmon but early in the season when they first enter. Once they pair up and move to the spawning mode, it’s over on feeding plus it’s unethical to fish when they are on the beds. Flossing, snagging and trash around is also a big problem here on the Lake Ontario tribs. I also started fishing using those methods but once I started understanding their behavior, I quickly found out they do bite and can catch them the proper way and gives you so much satisfaction. Loved the first float drop/bobber down, no mistake about that hit. Wish you a great salmon season and keep up the great work and content you make. Cheers Adrian

Appreciate how much of a conservationist and respect to the environment that you have for our state of MI. I agree I am disgusted by the snaggers and I am not one to refrain from calling them out and making sure DNR finds them. You are correct flossing is common, but it can stop, and should stop. Its oddly weird right now since covid so many people got into fishing, but I'm starting to notice a lot of people are chilling out and not chasing it like they used to. Combat fishing is still a huge pain at certain sites we won't name. However I appreciate the thoughtfulness and integrity that you put into these fishing videos. Also how informative and polite you are. You are much better than many other salmon and steelhead chasing youtubers out here.

@FishFray
@FishFray 10 ай бұрын
I primarily use skein, see the link for how I cure it. You can also use loose bait tied into spawn bags, kings are not picky if they are in a biting mood. Id tend to use beads only in clear water or when I know the fish are pressured, because it is a more subtle presentation

Being from Alaska my favorite method was using a spin an glo with a 3/0 snelled hook with chartreuse yarn and a mister twister no bait. Rubber core weight 24” above the rig. PRIMO!! try it. Let it sit above a deep hole or sitting some what in the hole. Salmon will let you know where to place it. Experiment. Works great. You can use bait with it as well.

Have you ever fished tidewater where this fish hold in deep pools right where the freshwater hits salt,and the fish are waiting for the first fall rain? The reason I ask is because I tried this out on a coastal river in Oregon last year and got skunked although rolling like crazy. There were others fishing the hole with bobber and bait and only saw two hookups. I was thinking of throwing a tail out twitcher under the bobber like I saw on a YT video filmed in Alaskan streams

Awesome video!! How do you set up your pole for a bobber rig and whats the best way to get that skein to float just right
@FishFray
@FishFray 10 ай бұрын
Starting at 7:50 I go through my skein rig. With that rig your skein should float the way you want it, unless the current is too strong or boiling

Id like for you to Try some 16mm BnR (or any other brand) soft beads man. They work great in Washington for me. I’m curious if they’ll bite down there. Great video!

@@FishFray yeah I've tried 14mm, 16mm and 20mm. 16mm was the sweet spot for me. the cerise works really good.

My ratio of bite to snag is 25% bite but Im using 4 egg bags. The bigger chunks of skein might help with that and save my arm from all that destruction and spooking the fish.

I've never used a centerpin before but I hear a lot of folks love them. Anyone have any tips for someone who wants to get one? Unfortunately I am missing the salmon run this year since I've been stuck in Romania the last 7 months, but I should be back for winter/spring steelhead season and would love to learn to float. Thanks for anyone replying.

Watched 2 kids go over the coffer Monday thinking it was legal to just net salmon, and a guy snagging right at the weir 😅 not a good start to the year. Hooked up but didn’t land it

What’s your favorite color arctic spinner? And do you prefer to throw upstream, across, or down?

Thanks for the video, man! I’m just getting into pinning on California coastal rivers for steelhead. Really wanted to pick your brain on the line/tackle choice. I got a 4” centerpin reel and 12’6” salmon/steelhead float rod (can be good for both pinning and spin, if I understand correctly). Now the rod is rated for 4-8lbs line and 1/32 to 5/16oz lure, so I understand you’re supposed to use the slow action of the rod to tire and bring the fish in. I see you’re using much heavier line here but same weight lure. Can you provide some insight on how I should set it up given the much lighter rating I’m seeing on my (and other similar) float rod? Thanks!
@FishFray
@FishFray 10 ай бұрын
Generally that line rating would be the range of leader that you would want to use with that rod. So basically, if you are running over 8lb leader you are increasing your risk of breaking your rod on a snag or fish. As far as lure weight, a 12'6 rod is probably not really meant to cast lures. I usually don't pay attention to that rating. Hope this helps

@@FishFray thanks! So if I run 7-8lb leader, should I use something like 12lb main line?

Great video as usual Fray, started using centerpin last year for steelhead and fell in love with that type of fishing. Whats the minimum weight rod youd use for salmon? I have a okuma sst 6-12 rating. Would that work or is it to light? Thanks
@FishFray
@FishFray 10 ай бұрын
You can definitely use a rod that size, but you risk breaking it with the size leaders that I run. You can certainly land these fish on lighter line, it just depends on the situation/ spot. I give gear suggestions but I tend to believe in the "use what you have" mentality especially for people new to the sport. Good luck!
