I think I want one of those. Broke my first rod setting the hook on a squawfish. Goture 12-footer. They're junk. Got a 9-ft Maxcatch I like better. Still want a shorter one. Really wanting to love this fishing technique but still struggling. Probably gonna have to spend more money. I'll get the hang of it tho. I've caught pretty much everything that swims in fresh or salt water. I understand the method. Just need some better equipment I think..

This picture-perfect tiny creek looks similar to some property I was recently able to acquire. One difference is that we catch native brook trout, who have likely not seen a person or anything artificial for 40 years when it was first surveyed. Since brookies only live about 8 years, you could call this virgin territory. There is no logged timber, and the sides are steep. No invasive plants, pollution, stocked fish, snakes, ticks, mosquitos, bugs or people. The only noise you hear is the roar of clear, cold falling water and occasional wildlife. We get a shower almost every afternoon and it never hits 80 degrees F. The creek is lined with the year-round green of mountain laurel and rhododendron. There is no development all the way to its source 1 mile away at 1 mile elevation. This is primitive living at its best.

This channel reminds me of my growing up dirt floor poor. Only fishing pole I had was a bamboo cane. Caught a lifetime of fish on it. Pan fish, bass, trout, bullhead, Catfish, even Caught a pickerel once. Loved it. Love the videos.

Excellent little stream love all the little pockets and small falls..perfect water. I think I've said this before but isn't bull trout didn't it used to be called Dolley Varden..gotta look it up again. Idk why they would change the name I like the sound of dolly varden much more romantic lol thank you for sharing your adventures!

Dolly Varden are very closely related, basically the Coastal Variety of Bull Trout, they used to believe they were the same species but determined genetically to be different. I also grew up calling them Dolly Vardens.

One of the things I try to do is look over your stream before you catch something and pin point where I think a fish may be. Good indoor practice before the season opens. Your POV video makes this work well, thanks.

I love it! Of all the western streams I've seen you fish, this one most reminded me of the streams I fish in the Smokies. Sure, the vegetation isn't the same, but minus that, it looks like any number of streams I've fished in the east - the same claustrophobic conditions, the need for creative casting, etc. Of course, back there it would be brook trout (char), not bull (char) trout.

I’ve watched quite a few of your videos and, while I obviously like your content, the one thing I really appreciate about your technique/process is how well you treat the fish. You land them quickly, keep them in the water most of the time in net and always wet your hand and gently release the fish by allowing it to swim upstream out of your hand. Far too many catch and release guys are oblivious to the stress the put these fish under. Thanks for great content (envious) and being a great role model. Would you consider a video solely on the best way to land, handle, photograph, and release fish? Thanks m

I have a small creek that I have donated a dozen flies to the trees and bushes this summer with an 8 foot rod. When the Foxfire arrives maybe I can get more than one or two casts before I make another donation. Hopefully a rod that is closer to 6 feet will work better. Thanks for the videos.

Great video, Tristan. It is really nice when you do rod evaluations (I have the foxfire rod, it is great). Despite tenkara fishing for years, I am really still uncertain about when you know to set the hook. You mention looking for a change in the line direction, and it seems to me like you mostly set the hook based on looking at the line behavior, bot by “feel”. If the spirit moves you, it would be helpful for those of us who still wonder how best to know when to set the hook if you could offer some insight. Thanks, Paul in Maryland

I like how you release most of the fish you catch back into the plunge pools you caught them out of. Not sure how important it is but if they’re living there, they’ve probably adapted to those pools

No. It's a small fish rod. Like 8 or 9 inches or smaller, really.

Stupid question, if bull trout are illegal to fish in some states what are those rules? Are some streams only have bull trout in them? Or is it targeting bull trout?
@flyguy20213 жыл бұрын
I think it’s generally illegal to target them. For example, don’t get caught with a seven-inch streamer and say you’re fishing for cutthroats.

How do they (or do they?) enforce a law against catching a bull trout, in a stream with five species of fish? I can see enforcing a law against *keeping* a bull trout, but how do they reasonably expect you to not catch one when you are really just fishing for the other four species?

I been a trout fisherman since age 7 and am currently 60. Number 1 rule rule I was taught was to stay as quiet and far away from the moving water when casting. Why don’t you just focus on fishing and follow the golden rule and add your voice over when editing. I am sure your scaring many trout from biting using your current video model

Seemingly these populations of small fish are threatened by the genetics of small population sizes and the effects of us humans causing genetic isolation at least here in the eastern US, with stocked non-natives populating all but the smallest streams. I have fond memories as a kid of catching and eating brookies from nearby streams just like this one, but that was then, a lot more is now known about these little guys. My question is when/where is it responsible to keep trout from these streams? It is still legal to do so, yet it would be such a spiritual catastrophe for my/our mountain streams to be devoid of these gems.
@kidplayinginthemud92843 жыл бұрын
Why do you state that this method of fishing is new in the States. That’s not true. People have been fishing with a string attached to a stick for hundreds of years. Maybe the method of how you attach the line is different but the result is the same , a line on the end of a stick. Before commercial fishing rods were produced millions of kids used a stick with some line attached. There were no fishing reels. Not every one could afford fishing rigs available for sale. Stop trying to cheat American history for your self glory
