Brant, I fished on quite a few military bases/installations with my Dad when I was a military dependent and later as a military officer (now retired) and everyone of them had some sort of warning sign that warned civilian boaters not to approach the installation's shores or structures within a certain distance (sometimes 200ft and sometimes included some sort of threat of prosecution). Additionally if you check on most navigational charts, there are map symbols that indicate the military off limits areas or stand off distance that vessels or aircraft have to maintain around some military installations.

If the base has a 200ft rule, it would be too easy to post signage along the shore stating that. I briefly checked their Morale/Recreation website and didn't see anything. There were no marker bouys for marking the 200ft line. If it's a security thing, it should also show up as a security icon on Navionics. I suppose in the end, it's better safe than sorry.. or ticketed.

When you put in at Navy Point on the other side of NAS Pensacola in Bayou Grande, the restricted areas show up on my nav chart. Never thought to look at my chart on the bay side. Though, from working on NAS previously I knew boats were not to come near. We were told to tell them they have to move out or to call base security if they don't. BTW, I have 2 flounder honey holes on NAS to hit fishing from shore.

The fishing distances from military installations mostly became a big thing after 911. I live in Norfolk and we used to troll for stripers in popular spot next to the navy ships. Can't do that anymore. We have to keep 500 ft away now.

Was there any signs out telling you not to fish inside the lines? They cant just tell you not to fish if it’s not posted in a very visible way. I understand it’s our military but they can’t just overstep their bounds like that that’s like telling you you can’t hunt of fish your own property because they decided to run ruffshot over it. They have to have it posted with clear visible lines. It still don’t matter whether you’re right there or all the way out where you can barely see the base there’s optics good enough to see everything you wanna see from that far away.

Navigational charts tell you this information. Recreational boaters often don't consult them or ignore them, but the information is publicly available. Signs may be helpful, but aren't necessarily required.

@@KissmyBasss If a person is boating/fishing, they should always consult the local regulations. For boating, local navigational charts will tell you where you can or cannot go. Of course, another way of being informed is someone from the installation yelling at you and educating you in the absence of signage/markings/navigational aids. In which case, it's generally enforceable after being verbally informed and failing to leave.

Robert for some reason I cannot respond to your comment or read all of it. But I have zero interest in proving proof of my service to a keyboard warrior lol. But civilians can go fishing on let’s say parris island sc all they have to do is provide proof of car insurance and a drivers license lol. You can fish in all the tidal creeks on a boat as long as they aren’t shut down for live fire on the ranges. Which they have boats out to cut anyone off from going into the impact area. You can go onto marine corps base Kaneohe bay and serf or fish so eat a big old dick.

It's up to the captain of the boat to understand the rules for restricted waters. Posting or marking boundaries on the waterway are not required for established military. The restricted waterway would be on your chart with other information as it pertains to time you can be there, distance from shore, etc. The most up-to-date information is through the Coast guard Channel 16. Whenever you're going to be near a military installation or a target site. You should reference your chart and contact the coast guard for the most relevant up to date information.

Hey Brant, don't know if you'll see this, but my dad was actually stationed at NAS Pensacola, the base you were fishing at, for around 2 months. got to fish from the dock, and saw several boats getting stopped and moved. I was confused and talked to the people on the boats and on the ground telling people to move. They only told me that they were ordered to tell boats. nobody ever harassed me, so I kept fishing. I only ever caught Sheepshead and pinfish, but there were a bunch of redfish and black drum there as well.

NAS Pensacola has / had a 500 foot exclusion zone around the shoreline. The port security guys will confront you. There used to be buoys out there (post 9/11) to stop folks from getting close, but if you are authorized to be on base, you can fish from the shore. Fished out of Sherman Cove a lot back in the day...

Yeah, it's still on the charts. It's not uncommon for the average service member to be unaware of the exact nuances of the legal restrictions. Whoever the boat operator previously encountered either didn't know how to enforce the restriction, or wasn't actually tasked with enforcing it beyond communicating that a restriction is in place. Which is why sometimes it's wise to just leave before someone is called who does actually know how to enforce it.

Nonsense. No signage while on the water is implicit consent in all tidally influenced water. Think otherwise? Post the federal statute that states a non proclaimed (posted) tidal area of a military base that the buffer zone is 200 feet. I will wait as no such law exists. IF they want people to stay away 200 feet it must have signage of a font size readable by a normally sighted person at 200+ feet. It also must be marked on charts or have a buoy line, something to designate the off limits zone. If it was a naval vessel that is completely different.

If I were you, Brant, I would try to investigate that further to find out what the exact terms are as far as being able to fish there. Obviously not everyone at the base had the correct information to give you on what their exact rules/terms were. I do believe though that you did the right thing by not getting into a confrontation with them, because they probably have the right to detain you and that would have just messed your day up completely. But like I said if it was me, I would probably research it at a later time. If you do, keep us updated and apprised of the situation. BTW, would you mind saying what military base it was? Otherwise, I really appreciate everything you do brotha, take care and GOD BLESS!

You know Brant sometimes people feel and think that this is their pier and they don`t want you near it, put a - Sign Up, and this way I don`t have to hear your beautiful voice screaming a couple of hundred feet away, that`s what we call a D- Head! in NYC and I`m sure in other fishing areas also where you find characters like this one. Otherwise a nice video. KZbin told me to change the wording 5 times on my comment they said it wasn`t friendly, I`m tired of getting banned for two days every time they feel it`s not appropriate language that I use, Hey Brant do you use Rumble?

Use to boat that area while living a short time in Fairhope, Alabama. The intercostal toward Pensacola is beautiful. Sandy beaches everywhere and the blue angels (name ??) would be practicing over us while having a shore lunch. The fly boys like to drop down and check out the ladies. Your tax dollars at work.

That because they don't wont you to catch their fish I used to fish it all the time the Coast guard had no problem with us fishing all around there so it's just the people don't want you to catch what they think is their fish

I’ve been through this before. UNLESS there’s a VISIBLE sign out THEY CAN’T STOP YOU. It’s tidal waters so idc what someone says from the dock. Tell them to GFC

No signage no restrictions. What exactly do these clowns think they did before the days of gps? Nothing on a paper chart either. Yeah remember those? I bet these people complaining cant read a paper chart. Great channel btw. Keep up the great work 🍀🐟

Actually, it is on the paper charts (11383 specifically) and even if it wasn't, it's written under 33 CFR § 334 and you can add it yourself. Not every law requires a sign to be posted.

Having been employed by the government in the area of security of the United States, it's not fishermen of fish they are concerned about, its fisherman pretending to be fishing for fish but really fishing for information/intelligence on our military activities they are concerned with. Laws or not, you have to sympathize with their aims if you like your country. Lots of other places to fish, why not make the job of our military folks easier and safer and our country more secure?

It absolutely has to be posted with signs and or buoys to be enforceable! Especially Military Bases and Government Installations on LAND, they’re all posted.. and that’s exactly why the Marine Police don’t enforce it there, (it’s not posted) **You should’ve ignored whomever was yelling at you.. Former USCG, 29yr LEO..

33 CFR § 334.778 states otherwise. No signs or buoys are required. It's on the nav charts and regardless, once warned, it absolutely can be enforced. People should ignore your comment.

@@JH-wd6dp Nah, criminal courts don’t work that way..I’ve been in the business 29 years.. just ignore whomever is shouting on land, it’s not a warning if you can’t hear them. If the Police show up and advise to leave then fine obey them. Definitely not an unidentified subject on shore, that’s not a sufficient warning.

You were a charter captain in Pensacola. You know better than to fish that close to the base, you can't play dumb about that one. This shit is clearly done for making a video. But hey, what do I know? 😂😂

Yeah, you weren’t hurting anything and you were being respectful. That said, it is a military base and the mere fact you were filming might be an issue. Or the possibility they’re dropped something dangerous near the shore. All kinds of unknown factors.
