It's easter weekend and the whole of New Zealand is on lockdown. That means no unnecessary travel and no fishing, its been two weeks and I'm having fishing withdrawals. Lucky for me we have a river on our property that is well stocked with fat eels, I head down and catch a couple, prepare them and smoke them for a tasty feed!

We used to drag them behind our mountain bikes on our way home from the eeling mission, I think that I drove way too fast and had too short a line on them so the big eel didn't spin...Have also used the hot water/news paper method but we had no news paper lol! Cheers!!!

Takes me back in time. Im 63 now,when we were young kids/teens Dads dairy farm back boundary was a big river as well. Had the rocky bottom unlike yours. We had swimming holes and eeling holes where the logs and branches caught up during floods. Caught heaps of eels and a friend had a smokehouse. YUMMY. Biggest i got was around 5ft long. This bought back good memories, Thanks Kerry

Far out your a hard case Kerry drag them down the road 😂. Lots of memories coming back man thankyou, we used to cover them in salt for half hour it would brake down the slime then just hose it off. I live rite by an estuary so have been getting my fishing fix by cast netting lots of baby mullet for this summers snapper missions. Bring on level 3 at least we be able to surf cast 🎣

Eel is delicious, I seem to remember as a teen I used to give them a light scrub in salty water, cut the skin all around just below the head and pull off the skin with pliers, have also just scrubbed the skin in salt, cut into big chunks as you did and simply fry with olive oil and a bit of butter, so good...

2 types of eel in NZ, short fin and long fin. The short fin is a lot more common. The long fin is getting harder to find, although you are still allowed to catch them. It is encouraged to let long fins go to encourage breeding and improve the numbers...

I nail the eel to a tree or post just after I’ve killed it. Take my knife run it around just below the head. Pull back the skin, get handfuls of dirt, grab the skin one hand each side and pull down. The skin comes off leaving a perfectly skinned fish. I then gut it take it home or back to camp and get ready for the smoker. Too easy. I used to live in Ross on the West Coast and caught kilos of eels using two long eel nets. Kept them alive in a rain water tank. When I had a around a hundred kilos I’d bag them and take them alive to the fishery near Hoki where they got sent to Europe.

almost anywhere in NZ where there is a river or stream, particularly with little slow flowing areas and pools, off to the side of the main stream or river..... like what was in this video. No license required, but land owners permission is required if you have to go across country to get to the water. A daily limit or either 4 or 6, I can't remember now. Take shortfin eel, let longfins go as they are getting reduced in numbers...

Dude. You're respectable to fish from the sea etc so why don't you do the same courtesy for eels. You don't tow them from the back of your car to annihilate them like that use salt and that'll de-slime them easier. You of all people should've known that and by the way the bigger eel of the two is a breeder and you should've put it back. Man...I'm peed off and going to unfollow you now.
@KerryFlowers
@KerryFlowers 3 жыл бұрын
The eel was dead by the time I dragged it behind the ute - You can call that disrespectful if you like but to me it is a practical method to remove slime, as for it being a breeder they will all turn into breeders if they are left so by that logic I should not take any - I'm not down there taking eels all the time so It's hardly a threat to the stocks...
