Love bank fishing...spinning is fun also... but my wife and I could spend all day sitting in our chairs on the bank watching our rod tips. Sadly my fishing buddy passed away five years now...but the memories will always be cherished. R.I.P. Deb!

I've gotten in the habit of using an additional rod holder. The extra one is used for re-baiting, this way your rod isn't sitting in the dirt or beach. After all it is only a few bucks.

Dip the dough baits first, before casting, gets the bait ball tite, protects the bait during cast, when slapping off water typically when using a sliding sinker. First time using ball baits for me was out at Lake Merced, in late 80's. Yes I said Lake Merced.... Great video. Thanks.
@FHSTackle5 жыл бұрын
Yes...Lake Merced....That was a great spot then...That's when I was learning the ropes of bank fishing for trout. Chabot was my home lake, but I'd hit Shadow Cliffs and Del Valle regularly. I lived in San Lorenzo back then and graduated from Cal State Hayward (Now Cal State East Bay) in the middle 90's...I spent a lot of time fishing Chabot, shooting at the Chabot gun club and fishing the mudflats along the south bay's eastern shoreline. They had just put in a big section of the bayside trail back then that ran basically from the San Mateo Bridge to the San Leandro Marina. I rigged out a mountain bike for running and gunning along that trail. I had a two piece 7 foot spinning rod for plugging for stripers and light bait fishing and a 3 piece 18' foot surf rod (It was a MONSTER!) for bait fishing for sharks, big rays and stripers...I could cast over 100 yards with that rod using a 10 oz weight....I'd strap those rods on the bike frame along with a huge gaff. The rest of my stuff when into a milk crate I rigged up behind the seat.....Those were the days...No bills, no deadlines and fishing all around....YES!! My biggest trout at Chabot was over 9 pounds and I had the lake record for a little while. On the mudflats I got an impressive list of fish including a 117 pound seven gill shark, a 73 inch leopard, 18 pound king salmon, mostly schoolie stripers to 10 pounds, 100 plus pound rays, a couple small sturgeon, perch, smelt and a few big dungeness crabs....
@pc62625 жыл бұрын
@@FHSTackle that's awesome, yes the days!! I had a 28' apollo at the Martinez marina for years, I fished the "fleet" like it was going out of style, infact today the fleet is out of style and just about gone! You brought back good memories of the 100 yard cast, I had a surf rod, bought at Gus bait and tackle on Balboa (still there) however I want to say it was a 12' deal, couldn't feel the perch bite on it at all, fishing the beaches, lol, true. However we used to get into some nice leopards between oyster point and the Brisbane marina, Those were the days. I've been fortunate to spend quite a bit of time in the siskiyou lakes, year round for some amazing trout species. Myself and kid entered into a trout derby in 2000, at Ranch Secca, up river! My kid took 1st in the JR division with a 8lb 60z trout and I took second in adult division with a 9lb even. Its surprising to see so many people goof up the dough baits, considering if you are 35 and younger you have grown up with it, like they say: live and learn. Very good tutorial, your best advice was to work it over the knot, I've always preferred that same method with a dip. Anyway I'm a new sub, great video keep them coming..

I really like your video (and the Intro cuts en :)), but I wish you would go into more detail.. like how heavy is the sinker you use, how far is the hook from the swivel, what size hook, and more close up shots of your setup
@baymagic6 жыл бұрын
It depends where you fishing. Windy days you may wanna use heavier swivel because of the wave, if the water calm you do not need heavy sinker. Distance between hook and swivel depends on water depth for instance if you casting in 10ft depth water I would give 2 feet distance, 5 ft depth 1 ft distance, the idea is you want to float your bait not touching the bottom. Size of the hook up to you I use usually 0.5cm and 1cm for lake and pond fish. I hope this would help.

question. how do you fish a county ran lake. muddy to stained water with stockers that are jumping but bite nothing.

and I mean literally nothing. every color of the power bait rainbow. zekes, castmasters, pheobes, super dupers, little jakes, panther martins, blue foxes, night crawlers, wax worms, salmon egss, and mealies. you get the picture right?

Sometimes jumping trout aren't eating. Other times they are eating bugs and that can make them tough to hook on bait or lures...In general when I see jumping trout, I try 3 things...Fly teamed with water filled bobber, tossing spoons and/or drifting bait under a slip bobber...Check out my channel I have a great video about tossing flies and bobbers....Thanks for watching!

Bay mudflats from San Leandro to Hayward....Those were exciting days..Riding my mountain bike and chasing leopard sharks, stripers, perch and more....One day I got an 18 pound chromer salmon while bank fishing behind San Lorenzo near the end of Grant Ave. Another day I was out there in the winter and hooked up with a 117 pound seven gill and landed it.....I had to make two trips on my bike to get that monster home!

Just a dumb question: Why do you use a leader? Since both were 10# (I think that's what you said), why not just put the weight and hook directly on the line? Thanks, great vids and info!
@FHSTackle6 жыл бұрын
You are 100% correct....That would work and it would be simple...The addition of a swivel and then a leader makes for a cleaner rig and protects your main line from line twist...Also it allows you to spool the reel with standard mono or even braid and then you can use the more expensive fluorocarbon for leader material...

Why did you set the hook so hard when your drag was that loose??
@FHSTackle6 жыл бұрын
I get crazy sometimes....
@Hunter_Archive6 жыл бұрын
Actually what he did was the right thing to do, you need to put the drag on loose because setting the hook like that could tear out the trout's lip if you have your drag on tight. If you set the hook too lightly or too late the trout will just spit the hook out and just will keep on stealing your expensive bait. 💲💲💲

My friend makes a very small loop in his line then pinches the bobber hook on the loop. When a Spring Pike mama grabs his bait, the bobber falls to the rocks so it's an obvious strike. pretty ingenious idea. he's lost a few bobber, but he uses tiny cheap ones. he can sit by his fire in 30 degree temps that way. lol

I've got to use the float trick on the line good thing I'm going fishing tomorrow
@seanbabi8 жыл бұрын
I use this technique all the time. To be honest it was kind of painful watching all your hits without touching the rod without setting the hook. When i leave it in the holder, i risk loosing my bait, and is the bait really gone? or should leave the line in the water longer ? I hate that. I see that "tap tap" pick up the rod, take out the slack then "tap WHAM!" if they are biting it they are taking it deep into their mouth. All those taps you see are fish mouthing, spitting, mouthing, spitting. the trick is to catch them before they spit
@liammacdonald9088 жыл бұрын
You are exactly right. Also if you wait that long there is a 90% chance the fish will swallow the bait and get gut hooked.
@FHSTackle8 жыл бұрын
I agree more or less....I'm trying to catch them to eat, so I'm not concerned about releasing fish. I've used a quick hook set method too...It works...Thanks for watching...
@baymagic6 жыл бұрын
you are touching good point, what I notice that last week I went fishing small trouts kinda shy to bite at first time they kept testing gently when I see it is tapping then pick up my rod. if I wait longer they do not bite, so I had to do action instead. I caught big trouts easy with float technique they bite with no doubt I can wait until the bobber goes up.

Hey Fred, Cal here...First of all thanks for watching my video...On some of my videos I talk about technique and on some of them I do talk about products. Here in northern California when it comes to catching planted rainbows, PowerBait is the king and I use it a lot. Zeke's is another floating dough as is Pautzke Fire Bait. This video is actually part of a larger project. I was trying to both show how to fish the dough bait and how you might play out the bites that come on it. I was also trying to make folks aware of Zeke's without throwing PowerBait under the bus...I wouldn't say that Zeke's is a alternative to PowerBait, but it is something I like to have, because some days they prefer one over the other...I also like to soak inflated worms. They offer up both scent and movement...Catch ya later...Have a great day!
