Hi afdb in The Hague Netherlands! Mmmm, northern pike are delicious fish. I remember a trip to Canada as a boy. Our fishing guide made us a shore lunch of the pike we caught. Fishing is difficult in hot weather for sure. I was out last Friday in 33°C, yet at sunset, I caught some big ones. I should have used egg in the buttermilk to get the breading to stick better, but that aside, the seafood meal was very tasty! It’s so good of you to stop by! One of life's biggest mysteries; "Why does the breading let go sometimes"? The world may never know. Interesting about the aquatic vegetation, John. I was out doing my usual 3 mile hike around Lake Baitstealer earlier and wondering about some mighty big broadleaf plants that I could see under the surface. I'll bet there are a few fish hiding around them!
@Juanelo19465 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan! In my practice run with a few shrimp, I used egg in the egg wash! The breading stayed on just fine. My mistake here was thinking that the egg wasn’t important! Wow, you hike far! Hi Ty! Great to see you! This was indeed a beautiful day. Sadly, I filmed this back on July 12th. Since then, the temperatures have been in the high 80s and 90s! Stifling! 🥵 Not too many devices free up as much time as the crockpot. I bet whatever you made in there came out fabulous! I do know of caraway seeds. In fact, I once did a video of a low-carb reuben wrap where I tried to capture some of the taste of rye bread by adding caraway seeds. It worked! I never thought to use them in coleslaw! Great idea! As to the seafood platter, I had done a practice run with some shrimp. I used beaten eggs and cream for the egg wash. But in the video, I skipped the eggs and went with just buttermilk. So I learned that buttermilk alone does not make an egg wash. Some of the breading fell off! Even so, the seafood was mighty tasty! Hi Joseph! Maybe it was just that one perch? I've noticed that yellow perch are susceptible to yellow grubs and black spot parasites more than the bluegill and bass. I can find a parasite or two in most of the fish I catch. The experts say that cooking them makes them totally harmless. But in severe cases, of infestation, the meat is thin and not at all appetizing. I hope it's just that one fish or a temporary thing in that lake. It’s so good of you to stop by! Hi Wayne! Bluegill are one of the most delicious fish on earth! It's only my opinion, but yellow perch might nose them out. It would be a close contest. John, great show! Of course there's always smaller gills but your overall population has those dandies. I envious of your outdoor fish market because it also has perch, bass and crappie. Your ancient little Reaction grub was doing really well. One thing you might have mentioned about grubs is that if you dont feel the tap on the first drop, just slowly lift, glide near the bottom and drop a few more times. Thanks for the interesting info on that chara algae. I've seen it elsewhere and just called it slop and goop. Your seafood extravaganza sure turned out great despite the unsticky breading. What a feast. I'm fresh out of suggestions for how to get through Miss Lulu's firewall of friends who are looking forward to a divorce from their husbands. Those guys obviously aren't professional chefs and probably don't know a grub from a swimbait. Therefore they are totally useless hahaha! Great show once again. Hope you get some of the rain and cooler temperatures that cruised through central Missouri last night. What a pleasant relief. Hi to Jeanne from your friends Don, Brenda and Lorraine
@Juanelo19465 жыл бұрын
Hi Don! I've noticed that the bluegill in mid summer aren't quite as big as the giants that are first to hit the spawning beds in spring. But Lake K's gills average a very nice size and I'll never kvetch. Yes, you're so right about what to do if no tap is felt on the first drop. In fact, the script in my "Tip of the Day" segment read, "then slowly lift a bit, and let the lure fall again." But I was rudely interrupted by the bluegill on the hook, and I lost track of my lines. He wasn't supposed to bite until later. You can't teach bluegill anything! • I had done a practice run with the breading and it worked great. But in the video, I skipped adding beaten eggs in the egg wash. So I learned that buttermilk alone does not make an egg wash. • Oh how I enjoy your positive spin on Ms. Lulu's deflating remark about women looking forward to divorce! I'm going to believe that I stand apart from the rest of the husbands because of the reasons you give. Thank you for the support! • Relief from the heat has finally arrived today. But it's not going to last long enough. This weekend I had to start fishing at 6 PM because the heat was so bad. My iPhone camera would have shut down, not to mention my whole body. Hi possum! Hahaha, you weren't far off the mark with your guess. I was tempted to change the video, and make enchiladas! I should have used EGG in the buttermilk to get the breading to stick better. It had worked great in my practice batch. But I thought the buttermilk alone would work as well. Not so! But that aside, the seafood meal was very tasty! It’s so good of you to stop by! Hi again, SF! The only thing I did differently this time from the time that it worked great was that this time I didn't have eggs in the egg wash. I think eggs make the fish stickier for the breading. You make a good point though! Thanks so much!

Hey, Juanelo! As always, a great show! I'm kind of surprised that you didn't get any bass though. Those curly-tailed grubs take bass frequently, even the smaller baits. Don't worry about the breading thing--if it tasted okay, it was successful! And as far as Miss Lulu's remark is concerned, you know what they say: Marriage is grand, but divorce is a couple hundred grand.
@Juanelo19465 жыл бұрын
Hi Ted! I caught several very small bass, smaller than 10 inches. I tossed them all back. They weren't worth showing on video. I did a practice run of this recipe and the breading stuck fine. The difference was that in practice I used beaten eggs with the buttermilk. I learned a good lesson. Eggs help tremendously in keeping the batter on. The seafood turned out delicious anyway! Oh yeah! You got that right! LOL! A couple of hundred grand is right! Hahaha! It’s good of you to stop by! I especially appreciate the good words my friend!

Love your "open air fish market" Juanelo! Beautiful greenery and beautiful open skies and clouds. Gotta keep the big ones, right? "It's a good one, it's a good one!" Love your excitement, tocayo! Beautiful fileting action too. Oh yes, coleslaw mix and cilantro......yum. Muy sabroso, claro que si! Flaxseed meal is a-ok in my book. Oh the carbs in buttermilk are notional, brother. They don't count. :) What a platter of fried goodness all together in happy deliciousness! Yum! No worries on the breading, Juanelo, it is the seafood that counts. Have a shot of bourbon and rock on! Your plated meal looked delicious and I would pay good money for a plate like you served. Beautiful! Oh...please give Miss Lulu Cheeks a hug for me for loving cilantro . Aww so sorry she was so down on all your married friends!
@Juanelo19465 жыл бұрын
Hi John! I figured out why the breading didn't stick this time, yet it did in the test run. I left out the egg in this one. But still, the seafood was crisp and succulent inside! We loved it! The carbs in buttermilk aren't many, and when you consider that only a tablespoon or two sticks to the fish, it's like zero carbs. The lake has cleared up nicely since flooding rains this year, and the weeds help. I do get excited when I catch one! It's mostly due to the fact that each fish I catch I'm closer to making the recipe I set out to do. The pressure is on, especially when I'm videoing it all! You know! Neither of us can understand how anyone could not love cilantro! It's so fresh and bright and flavorful especially when compared to parsley. I'll give her your hug and give her one for myself! She may seem down on marriage, but I'll change her mind yet! Stay tuned! It’s good of you to stop by! I especially appreciate the good words tocayo! We wish you and yours all the best!!!

Hi Roger! Most algae is bad news, like what we have in Lake Erie, but this chara stuff is weed-like and is the darling of pond management experts. Have you tried using the whey protien powder again for your base coat? It's my go to for low carb frying. I actually wait for the powder to turn into the translucent goo. I then coat it in flax seed, parm cheese, or whatever else I want in the coating. The protein powder goo holds anything you want on the food.
@Juanelo19465 жыл бұрын
Hi Mr. Furious! I've used the whey protein powder (isolate) only twice. But the last time it was just fabulous for deep frying! When done right, the color and crispy texture of the fish is wonderful. It does get gooey though, and when filming, when everything is delayed due to framing issues, camera angles, mic problems, messing up my words, etc., it can get too gooey and almost impossible to work with. You've found the exact timing! I like the grit of flax seed, it's just like cornmeal. Parmesan cheese is a great addition to many breadings. I never thought of using it with the whey! It’s so good of you to stop by! I especially appreciate the good words, and the great suggestion my friend!
