I really like the barrel swivel idea I gotta try that. Good video and I'm definitely buying one of those spinners. I use and love Arctic Spinners! I've only been doing KZbin fishing content for 3 months and Arctic Spinner's already naming a lure after me, it's pretty cool. I don't make a dime from the company I'm just a 100% believer in the lure. Good luck next time on the water, tight lines!

Perfect timing as it should be just starting. I hope you can do a video catching a few fish with this set up. I like your idea about starting out with a bead to keep the swivel away from the rod guide. I guess some people tie braid to mono with a uni-knot, but I never was comfortable with that and my leader is always shorter too.
@NorthwestOpenSeason5 жыл бұрын
Steve T - you’re right, salmon should be showing up in the bays shortly. We have several days on the calendar this fall to try and out some salmon on the bank, so hopefully there will be some good video content as well. Thanks for watching.

Great info 👍👍 Thanks! I am considering an Okuma Rockaway Surf Saltwater Spinning Rod - 10ft for this same type of fishing with 1 Oz spinners, but I can’t decide between the Medium Light (1/2 - 2 Oz , 8-17lb) and the Medium (3/4 - 3 Oz, 10-20lb)… Any experience with these rods?
@NorthwestOpenSeason4 ай бұрын
@@Benjamin-qr3yx I have one. I would go with the ML version if you want it for casting spinners, they are pretty sturdy rods. Also, I don’t like how long the butt is on that rod, I think it would be difficult for casting over and over again.
@Benjamin-qr3yx4 ай бұрын
Thanks 👍 The butt does look quite long 🤔 I’ll probably go with the same rod you’re using then; it seems hard to beat for the price.

By the way, which model Okuma Rockaway Surf Saltwater Spinning Rod would you recommend for plunking (Columbia SS beach style location)? Thanks
@NorthwestOpenSeason4 ай бұрын
@@Benjamin-qr3yx I don’t plunk the Columbia much, but for that you’d want the heavy one because you’ll want to be able to cast 8-12oz to hold.

Always learning Pac NW fishing, love Salmon, tons of Respect. Hardest part for me now is safe release. Lol! With your experience...Does the heavy leaders work on Winter Ghosts? Thanks and appreciate the videos!
@NorthwestOpenSeason3 жыл бұрын
If by winter ghosts you mean winter steelhead? I usually don’t use a leader heavier than 12lb for steelhead. For salmon, I’ll use 30lb mono in bays and rivers because they don’t seem to be as line shy as steelhead.

What you got for the spring run?
@NorthwestOpenSeason4 жыл бұрын
Kevin Linn - These same principles will work on spring chinook. There are a few bays that you can target them, but spring chinook do not stage in tidewater and bays like fall fish do so it’s a little tougher. I have caught spring chinook in Willamette tributaries casting and retrieving the same spinners. Just look for slow pools. Hope that helps.

What size hook did you uses when you swapped the bait hook?

So I have an Okuma Rockaway Spinning Rod 12 feet in length with a Penn Battle 5000 loaded with 30 pound braid. Would that set up work throwing spinners for Salmon? Also would tying a 30 pound mono leader using a double uni knot rather than the bead and barrel swivel work? Thanks Tony
@NorthwestOpenSeason4 жыл бұрын
Anthony Heckard - Hey Tony! Good questions. So the rockaway surf rod will definitely work, I have one also but I use it for crabhawk and sturgeon because I bought one of the heavier ones. You might experience arm fatigue after casting for a long period of time though. Also, the uni knot will provide a buffer for mono, but it will not prevent line twist. Also, you want the spinner to rotate freely if you hook into a coho, they are quite acrobatic.
@pdxfishing68405 жыл бұрын
Cast into the wet side? No wonder I've been skunking, I've been doing it wrong all these years haha just messing, great video! This makes me much more confident.

PDXFISHING - haha just seeing who watches to the end, you passed. You’ll learn a lot more once you get out there and try it a few times
@mikeroberson2172 жыл бұрын
A triple hook is considered 1 hook. Also using barrel swivel will wind knot need to use a double uni knot.
@NorthwestOpenSeason2 жыл бұрын
It is one hook, but has three points so in a “single point” regulated area, you can’t use a treble hook. And I’ve never had a wind knot from a barrel swivel, and it’s purpose is to keep the line from twisting, not just add a leader. Hope that helps.
@dietrichmcdaniel64104 жыл бұрын
So I am trying to learn and I was at the fishing shop and they said no bared hooks and I saw barbs on those. So what is the law here in Oregon?
@NorthwestOpenSeason4 жыл бұрын
Dietrich McDaniel - the Columbia River usually has a barbless hook law. I buy hooks with barbs, and then pinch them down with pliers if I will be fishing there. It’s complicated, but I recommend going to the Odfw website and read about the zone/waterbody you are fishing beforehand.
Why dont you tie an fg knot for your leader instead of using a swivle
@NorthwestOpenSeason3 жыл бұрын
Because an FG knot doesn’t prevent you line from twisting when retrieving the spinner. And also allows your line/spinner to roll with the fish after you hook them.

Thanks for the great tips! Those squid stinger looks awesome as well. What size do you recommend for chinook salmon? #5, #7 or #8?
@NorthwestOpenSeason4 жыл бұрын
I really like the pink over white w/ black #8, pink over white King #7, Chartreuse #8 for chinook. Those are my top 3 for sure. The King 7 blade will cast farther, but those magnum hammered #8 put out a lot of vibration. Good luck

30..40 lbs test leaders???
@NorthwestOpenSeason4 жыл бұрын
Daniel Gomez - Yes. I’ve been using the same $5.00, 30lb test spool of mono for about 10 years. I use it to tie my bait leaders and also my spinners for casting. I have 40lb also but that’s pretty thick. Salmon are typically not leader shy, so you don’t need to go light or use fluorocarbon.

Do you add a swivel between your mono and stinger?
@NorthwestOpenSeason3 жыл бұрын
No, I tie the mono directly to the lure. The barrel swivel between the braid and mono adds enough twistability.
