Fishing for Roach using a Mitchell 300 Reel and Stick and Slider Float

In this video I use on old 1950s Mitchell 300 reel and some more traditional methods to trot for roach. Fishing close in with the stick float I soon realise the river is very deep and switch to a sliding waggler to target deeper sections. This sees me bank my biggest roach in quite a while!

We love those Mitchell reels here in the States too my friend I have two (a 300 and a 304S) and I fish with them all the time. 🎣

Top work Ewan, I'd be over the moon with a lovely roach like that! I used to have a Mitchell 300, handed down from my dad, gutted when it got stolen! Nice to use old stuff, although I have to say reels have come on a little over the years!! Very impressed with your music, a lot of work has gone into this. 😊

Cheers! It was a bit unexpected but very welcome! That's a shame as the sentimental value was probably more than the cost. I have just refurbished one I got from my uncle so will be out with that soon. I enjoy how simple they are and perfect for taking a step back and just fishing, no baitrunners ect. Glad you liked the music, takes about half a day for a video like this.

It does, badly! I was originally going to use this reel as parts for another more sentimental one... but after this session I might be too attached! Servicing it will be my job this weekend.

@@riverfossfishing That clacking sound on the retrieve sounds like it's trying to trigger the bail arm return. Take the spool off and have a look and you will see what I mean. I think there's a spring involved that may have gone weak. Top fishing. I'd consider using hemp as feed when it's hard to read where your loose feed is going... it sinks quickly and can be more accurate.

Great video Ewan, and a very nice Roach mate. The Derwent is a Yorkshire river I've never fished, as I was always of the belief that it was deep and sluggish everywhere ?. How wrong I was. Are these club waters you fish, or D/T ?. Keep up the good work lad.

Many thanks. The Derwent can be tough but the more time you put in the better it gets. I think the lower Derwent is deep and slow but there are some faster stretches. I mostly fish YDAA or free bits, I like to put a lot of time into a river and really get to know it so day tickets don't work so well for me.
