Nice. I use Penn slammer tho. Its been underwater a few times off my kayak in the Carolines and No problem! 8 years still making big kills - no cudas, we talking blue fins and giant spanish macs…Shimano tends to drown and for the price paid its a big loss.

Lol in February I’ve been to the same resort,right under those rockets where you’ve caught the barracuda was a small baby shark,around 20-30 pounds. Have it on video:)

Some wonderful footage here. I found my way here as I am researching items to donate to Cuba. I know Cubans fish for food along the shoreline, off bridges etc., boats being off-limits to them due to the flight risk! What species are they going for? If I wanted to donate line and hooks, what would be best for the coastal food fishing they do? I think they prefer live bait so do not require lures but I could be wrong. Know nothing about fishing, just looking to help as it is a real struggle for them right now.

This is nice of you. You are in luck because my friend's wife is Cuban and he often brings fishing gear down for them. This is typically what they need the most: 1) Hooks: small (#6; amzn.to/3oy4cYi) and long shanked (1/0; amzn.to/34zHgQy) Find large packs of 50-100 that are relatively cheap such as the ones there. 2) Strong monofilament line 80-100lb for handlining (amzn.to/35HBuf0) Quality doesn't matter, the cheaper the better.

@@popofishing Excellent advice, thank you. Without your advice, I'd have bought line that was too weak. Is there a particular type of cheap lure they like to have, or is not all baited with food scraps or live bait? I'm guessing the line will do for the usual trick of using an empty beer can as a reel?
@popofishing
@popofishing 3 жыл бұрын
@@thespiritsafeThey don't typically have access to rods and reels so they won't have too much use for lures. Some people do have them but it's rare. When it comes to bare necessities for most people, it's going to be line and hooks. They can catch plenty with just that by handlining.
@thespiritsafe
@thespiritsafe 3 жыл бұрын
@@popofishing great advice, thank you. I would not have known that handliners cannot use lures, so very helpful. In future years I will try to get some rods and reels to them but right now the priority is to get some protein on their plates - there are shortages at the moment.

@@jhulioh2844 Yes, walk south along the beach until you reach the entrance to the marina and the Hemingway Bridge. Stand at the rocky section where the water is deeper than the beach. Cast lures straight out and towards the bridge. I caught fish on lures and drifting a deadbait, using the small silver fish the net casting guys caught. Best time of day was sunset into darkness. Good luck and let us know how you get on!

what about eating? keep anything to eat? or just for sport?
@popofishing
@popofishing 8 ай бұрын
You can if you want. You can always take fish to the cooks to prepare. I give fish to the guys on the catamarans. If I'm by myself, I just release them. Also depends on the type of fish, some are better for eating than others. Barracudas aren't the best. Cheers

The surf rod is great for casting heavier baits from shore. Even for trolling. It's too big for boat casting or for casting smaller baits.

Do you not have to be accompanied by a guide on the bridges ?
@popofishing
@popofishing 4 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure you don't. I've fished unaccompanied on bridges in both cayo guillermo as well as cayo santa maria. I've heard stories of people being kicked off the bridges by police but never experience that. Cuba is very relaxed when it comes to those things, particularly with tourists.

@@popofishing interesting to know . Have you ever fished a place over there called causeway ? Heading over to cayo coco in April I cant wait
@popofishing
@popofishing 4 жыл бұрын
@@squidge218 Yes. The causeway is essentially any road which runs over seawater. In both CSM and CC, it connects the islands to the mainland. Typically you want to fish the bridges on the causeway because this is where bait is flushed in/out during raising and falling tides. If you are fishing with lures, let the current take your lure out a good distance before reeling in.

@@popofishing and you havent ever had issues fishing alone there then ? If not I'll go alone to the bridges
@popofishing
@popofishing 4 жыл бұрын
@@squidge218 Nope. Just get a taxi to take you there. Or walk if it's close. I only fished the bridge close to my hotel once though. For me, it was more convenient to fish the rocks right in front of our hotel. There are tons of fish right off the rocks in the evenings and mornings.
