My wife's favorite is the Carolina rig. I like them too, but usually use a dropper rig because I can hop over to the fishing pier/bridge and the hook stays off the bottom (where the dreaded hardhead catfish like to lurk).

Catfish are the best tho!
@2reelyakrz4813 жыл бұрын
@@chefeatsher I love freshwater catfish and I've heard that saltwater catfish taste similar. But saltwater hardhead catfish (and sailcats) have several hard spines and the entire fish (including the spines) have a thick coating of slimy stuff all over them that stings and causes the wound area to seriously swell up. I got skewered once through a middle finger which swelled up to twice its normal thickness and I couldn't bend it - I spent a whole week explaining to people that I wasn't flipping them off 🙄😂
@joshuaroach18343 жыл бұрын
In SC where this was recorded it’s illegal to keep any saltwater catfish. Saltwater Cats have a poisonous membrane on their fins that is actually quite dangerous. A guy I fished with in Siesta Key lost his hand because of an infection from a saltwater cat.

Thanks, I learned something new! Here on the south Jersey shore I’ve used the high low and fish finder. But never really knew (believe me I’m far from an expert on surf and pier fishing) about or considered the jig technique. Thanks again for teaching me something that I’m really looking forward to try. One rod to bait and wait. The jig method to keep me busy.

I dig the vid, and the jig head recommendation! The fish finder/ Carolina rig seems to be the most popular rig for bigger fish from the beach. And I think there’s good reason for that thought! But I really like the jig head idea! In fact I think if you could a jig head with a fishbite launched a decent distance you could catch some really cool fish! I’m thinking a 1-2oz jig head might be in order!

Is there a way you can setup your braided line so you can switch between fish finders and high/low rigs without having to build the rid each time you want to switch? Maybe use swivel snaps at the end of your braided line and hook the rig to that?

@@ronaldbrunsvold5632 taking 4 rods, 2 7’, 2 9’ Largest reel 4500 series
@ronaldbrunsvold56323 жыл бұрын
Geoff, you have rod and reel covered. The 4500 is sufficient for 95% of catch from the beach or pier. A lighter reel on the 7’ rod is fine for close-in casting. Only issue may be getting salt water and sand into reels, in which case a salt water reel might be advisable. A Penn spinfisher VI, or Penn Slammer III are great for Saltwater. If just trying it out for first time, you could be careful and get by with a “freshwater “ reel. For the main line, 20 lb braid would be fine on the 4500 reel. Power Pro Spectra is a dependable braid line. A 30 lb monofilament will work for almost all your leader needs. Ande mono is OK for this.
@geoffhirsh24023 жыл бұрын
@@ronaldbrunsvold5632 all reels are saltwater with exception of one. Most are braid, one mono. How much leader should I use? Kill devil hills surf casting. Plan on shrimp, fake bait and spinners. Fortunately, tackle shop is about a mile from where we are staying. Thanks for your input.

Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup kzbin.infoUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.
