I FOUND A GIANT BROWN TROUT!!
My passion for brown trout drives me to fish through rain storms, wake up at ridiculous hours, and fish miles of water with almost no return on the investment of my time. As time goes on and life becomes more busy I realized that every moment spent on the water is worth it’s weight in gold… which is why when my buddy JP and I planned out a long day of streamer fishing I knew something good was going to happen.
Passion drives much of my decision making… and after an hour or two of fishing with nothing to show for it we should have just changed plans. But rarely do I make rational decisions when I’m looking for brown trout, plus we were already so committed to what we were doing.. and then my luck changed in an instant. With the first wild trout of the day we continued on and I found a giant...
The definition of passion, at least in the non-biblical sense, is a strong and barely controllable emotion. And I can promise you nothing else on earth will make me lose my mind like breaking off a big fish. Spending so much time only to be robbed of the one thing you’re after takes me out of the game mentally. I start to lose focus and my fishing takes a turn for the worse. It takes me a while to reset and refocus and if it happens more than once it's NOT good!
And just like that our day was made. Finding those windows when the big fish are active is half the game. We had fished for hours at that point with sparce action, then within 5 minutes I had 2 20 inch fish practically jump out of the water for my fly and JP caught a good brown. The water clarity was rapidly changing and I truly believe that the fish know they’re about to struggle to eat for a few hours, if not a few days, and try to get a last bite to eat. I’ve said this before but streamer fishing is rarely a numbers game. Could we have gone nymphing or used a different fly fishing technique to catch more fish? I’m sure, but there’s nothing quite like brown trout rolling on your streamer. So I guess the lesson in this video is to never give up, no matter how horribly your day is going.

I love your videos and dedication to streamers! That colored water just makes me want to be right there with you! I've moved to Florida now where almost all our fly fishing is direct contact fishing, streamers! I fish Red, Snook, Lady Fish, Sea Trout, and Tarpon all with streamers and I'm having a ball. I left WI where I fished for either Browns or Smallies almost exclusively with streamers (except when the smallies will take a BoogleBug popper!!) I do have a slight suggestion for you, from the many guides I have fished with, Keep your rod tip Down, down in the water if possible, making a direct connection to the fly. With your rod tip higher you have a dropping bit of slack in your fly line and this increases the missed takes. I realize your streams and style may make keeping your rod tip in the water not always possible but keep that tip as low as possible and you will increase your hookups! Tight lines!

I streamer fish a lot as well and I run mostly 0x fluorocarbons or 17 lb straight mono. I only had one fish break me off streamer fishing and that was at night and I was mousing. Streamers it’s a game of quality and not numbers. My personal best day of streamer fishing was 15 but every single fish was 18 inches or bigger. The biggest was a 26 inch brown that ate a big nasty articulated streamer

I really enjoy your videos and seeing you fish those wild water rivers, I never realised, before I saw your films, that any fish would live in such fast flowing turbulent water. Shame about losing that fish especially as you were using suitably strong line. Appart from your disappointment that fish will probably die, unless it can get rid of the hook which is unlikely. I've often seen dead fish with hooks in them.
@hardmanfishing
@hardmanfishing 3 ай бұрын
I don’t know, I’ve seen a few comments about the fish dying. If it was truly a 2 foot fish that streamer won’t affect him much. Those big browns have some impressively large mouths. He also didn’t jump out of the water or try to throw the hook after it broke, making me think the fish may not have even been hooked that well and likely got rid of the fly quickly. OR I could just be telling myself this so I feel better 😂 either way thanks for watching!

Man you gotta hate breaking off on a fish you have hooked . I always feel so bad myself too. Because more than likely that fish will die unless someone gets lucky enough to hook the fish soon and catches and releases the fish and takes your hook out. I hope you tried that area a few more times later that week and catch him to save him/her . Also the other thing I always hate is when a big trout totally inhales my lurer and gets hooked in the gill . Worst thing possible when you’re like us and catch and release 99 percent of the time. Only fish I keep anymore is the trout that is gill hooked and bleeding . When fishing for wild fish and if your a good fisherman I tell ya one thing I almost always have at least one get hooked deep every outing because you fool the fish so well they absolutely hit your lure with no doubts about it . That’s why I always take my surgical pliers and also have a good net so many times even with a hook near gill I can manage to get it out without a lot of bleeding and I only release that fish if I’m sure it will make it . I honestly have broke off on a fish before and 5 days later I got the fish to hit the same lure again and caught him and got my lure back 😂 hook was buried deep but in roof of mouth not in gills was able to get lure out after I unhooked fish . The fish looked so happy and chilled in net a minute letting it recover I let it go gently and the fish actually hung out a min near me like say thanks and when I went to make sure it was fine it bolted back into the deep current . 😂 Amazing catch and story I’ll never forget that one and it was only about a 22-23 inch Rainbow that was built like a tank . I believe it was a stocker that basically turned into a wild fish that I’m sure was in the wild over a year and had recently spawned. There is some streams and rivers in my area that can hold fish and reproduce if they aren’t all ripped out by anglers keeping them. This year I fished new creek before it was stocked dnr accidentally posted they stocked it when they didn’t yet last stocking was in May last year at that point and it was tons of browns . I went that evening after work only had 2 hours to fish and I caught 5 real nice fish that lived through whole summer in that stream and also those fish all you could tell had spawned . 2 holes I fish I caught pairs of male/female browns . Other one I caught was way up stream above stocking locations I’m sure more were around and also caught a 6th fish that was a native brook trout . I’m amazed how well those fish did in new creek with how dry it got at end of summer this past year . That stream was a very low trickle end of august. Makes me wish they would make the section above the turn off to Burlington catch & release and only stock it with browns and brooks . I had a big rainbow on that day it got off though so couldn’t count it but it also had survived the summer . North fork of south branch was the same way this past year . All summer long brown trout were all over the river . They survived all summer long and thrived even in late August when it got super low and warm . Somehow I noticed this year the strain of Brown trout they are stocking are able to handle temperatures of water that no one would believe and thrive. They were feeding off the surface in the evenings and everything and I’m sure that water was 75 degrees at least. Didn’t fish those days went mushroom hunting but could easily see them swimming and feeding still. Even in small to medium sized lakes like Dam 14 the fish stocked in spring survived . Me and my buddy caught two of the brooder tiger trout that were stocked in May in early October . Just shows people need to realize these fish are hardier and know how to survive if they have adequate food supply and oxygen . I think their survival through summer months has more to do with cleanliness of water and oxygen levels than temperatures now. If water isn’t as clean the oxygen levels are lower so at warmer temperatures they can’t handle that. The dirtier streams/lakes get algae and that sucks up oxygen and causes them to die . This year had started out pretty well for me and now weather appears to be turning more towards spring so fishing is only going to get better here on out 👍 Good luck in your adventures as well wish you the best keep catching them giants 💯

Sustainability is used as marketing jargon in what feels like every single product. It's not rare at all in today's world. Also common is KZbin personalities, like yourself, ready copy (or ad libbing) the same BS jargon and buzz words ad nauseum.
@hardmanfishing
@hardmanfishing 3 ай бұрын
First of all I’m not a KZbin personality I’m just a regular dude who likes to fish a lot. I have a full time job and work like everybody else. Second of all it’s not that deep, if you don’t want to support the company then don’t 😂 Just enjoy the video and skip the ad if it really upsets you enough to leave a comment.
@mikeb.7722
@mikeb.7722 3 ай бұрын
@@hardmanfishing it's not the ad. It's the statement that "sustainability" is under-represented when it is in fact one of the most popular/appealed to concepts at the current time. You are a KZbin personality whether you want to admit it or not. Maybe you used to be just a guy making fishing videos, but I believe advertising changes that. You maybe used to say only what you wanted, but now that you're associated with one or more brands, your words no longer belong solely to you. It's called "selling out." Which I personally don't have strong feelings about. What makes me cringe is watching a channel that I feel used to be just a guy trout fishing transform into another KZbin personality that says what he is paid to say, not what he believes. There's no argument.
