When I was stationed in Adak for 22 months, I spent 27 days of leave to go onto a cod boat called the "Paula Hendry" (since sold and moved to Southern Florida). It was the hardest and most dangerous work I have ever done. Based on that one experience alone, I believe that the men on these boats deserve far more credit that they'll ever get.

By far the funnest fishery ever. I miss Herring fishing. We fished one October and the openers were every other day for 20 min a day (so 20 min. Every 2 days). After a month we never got our net wet. On the last day of the season at minute 19 we let the net go and ended up catching 70,000 lbs. of herring. Cruising around those bays in October is beautiful and so peaceful. Best month of my life.

This is an outstanding video with great narration, I never new that the smaller ships fished so close together. It's no wonder that near collisions and tangled nets can be a cause for a stressful day. That's not to say the adrenaline rush you get from all this fast paced action isn't intriguing. @TheMallard 33 So I've done those types of "openers"(what they are called in Alaska), with a skipper who was cool as a cucumber and skippers who were hot heads. Guess who caught more fish? Cooler heads always prevail, and just because you are stressed doesn't mean you have to transfer that energy to your crew. What also isn't mentioned here is that these guys who fish Sitka sac Roe are some of the wealthiest fishermen in Alaska. They are highliners from salmon fisheries who got into herring during the good years when a permit was priced at peanuts and the price of herring was astronomical(like 1200-1500 a ton). So while yes, they need to make money and it is a business, these guys aren't going to go out of business if they miss a set.

See how they burst the fish? Without bothering to kill it first? It would take them a second to kill. Fishing before the fish gets to spawn just shows the greed. You wonder why it is less fish before? This video tells you all about it ;) Love the sea you say? Nope... They are there to ruin it. Make sure you buy fish from places the harvest is regulated.
@mhansen094 жыл бұрын
I can't speak for the English channel, but the Alaska fishery is the most highly regulated fishery in the world. The scientists in the state Fish and Game test every year and there is a quota for how much fish is allowed to be harvested. Turns out the fish come back every year, in fact even more than years prior.

@@MegaSandman1977 So why haven't the populations been wiped out completely? Amazing that hasn't happened due to increased mouths to feed. That's a better way of looking at it. Check the population decrease of fish compared to the population increase of people and you should be amazed at what conservation/smarter fishing can achieve. There's a nice balance now.

Suerte!
