Just discovered your channel and its really great! Probably my favourite one from now on! One comment I’d have is that the tests that you define breaking Strain, are actually tests for the breaking strength (or resistance, whatever you want to call it). The strain is, by definition, the deformation of the material you’re testing whilst in the plot you show in the video, I see the force on the vertical axis and time on the horizontal axis, so no strain measurement (that is in fact generally done separately or in post processing of the data)

Appreciate your feedback. I am certainly no material scientist, but are you suggesting that "strain" is more the deformation (stretch) of the material at failure? Currently I don't really have the ability to measure this, although some of the multi-thousand dollar tensile testing machines do seem to have this as a measurement.

@@thelinelaboratory oh no worries, I didn’t mean that it’s a mistake…it might be that for fishing lines that’s the term generally adopted. But I’m a civil engineer and have done some lab tests in my career (and studied many material behaviour plots), and generally strain is the deformation. Typically the material behaviour is described through a stress-strain curve (with stress on the vertical axis and strain on the horizontal - stress is exactly the value you calculated in psi in all your videos). So that’s the only reason for which I said that :) and because as an engineer I’m used to precise terms , sorry about that haha I don’t think that measuring the deformation for braid would be very important though, so unless you’d like to know how much elongation each braid presents at failure or throughout the test, then the test you’re performing with force and time is perfectly fine. If you’d like, one thing that could maybe be done is to measure the displacement of the mobile part during the breaking test: that should give the elongation of the braid and you’d be able to plot a force-displacement curve. But there could be a problem with that, represented by the fact that the displacement measurement could be affected by potential tiny slip of the braid. But this was just an idea, as I said I think it’d be a bit redundant to know the elongation of each braid (but could also be interesting for someone maybe). Anyway, thanks for performing all these tests! Your channel is great, and keep up the good work!

@@HBweisse Really good info thanks for that. I did consider measuring the displacement of the platform however on my testing rig it wont be accurate to correlate this to stretch. Occasionally there may be some slip, but the biggest issue is that i have silicon sleeves on the 2 posts. As the line tightens it "bites" down into this silicon to provide a more distributed load and rather then just relying on the clamping force alone. I would somehow need to take this into consideration and subtract it from the final stretch distance. Different lines compress the silicon in different amounts, so there is no simple calculation as the distance of compression or penetration of the line into the silicon is likely to vary. I could make an approximation of number of wraps x compression depth, then work out a total distance, but i just don't think its accurate enough to then be able to give an accurate stretch reading. With this in mind just didn't worry about the calculation as i am not confident on the derived numbers.

10lbs is not "maximum". It's average breaking strain according to sunline. Max is 6kg which is roughly 13lbs although sunline says it's 12, probably because people like even numbers better ;)

@@thelinelaboratory in the fluro series would be cool to see the steelhead/salmon lines like Pline, Seagar, blood run and I'm sure there is a few others that state that are for salmon and steelhead these are supposed to have higher abrasion resistance because salmon and steelhead have sharp teeth

When I get some higher strength lines, I certainly test them although for now my tensile machine has a limit of around PE3. I can test the higher strength on another machine but i need to line up a time to use it so its a bit of a challenge. I also find that the majority of lines that are submitted for testing are at the lower end of the strength ratings.

I know American line is usually labelled at knot strength and is tough. I buy 6, 10 or 20 lb. These Japanese lines are plus 50% and fluffy. I stay clear of them. I can't be bothered working it out.

I will be adding knot strength (FG) in the upcoming tests so we will see if that aligns closer to the labeled strength.

I buy lines based on diameter. Strength is usually a lie, although Sunline's average strength seems to be either after months of fishing or with a knot.

Great job as usual, mate 👍 On their official website (link from your website), the picture of the product does not have the "ADV" writing. Do you know if it is a new version, and what is the difference. Cheers.

Oh great pickup i missed that! I linked to the wrong one on their website, I have just fixed that on my Sunline summary page, thank you!. Looking over the Sunline site they appear to have 2 versions. The ADV one appears to of introduced "Deep Resin Technology", where the "normal" one doesn't list that. ADV can be found here: fishing.sunline.co.jp/english/line/16993/ and the "normal" one can be found here: fishing.sunline.co.jp/english/line/184/

@@thelinelaboratory wow thx for the links! They seem to be the same line except the ADV has a coating that makes it slicker, for longer casts and better abrasion resistance (so they say). And probably for (a lot) more money. Lol. Where I am, the ADV isnt available yet, but the regular one is priced similar to shimano kairiki x8.

@@victorbanta I hadn't heard of Kizuna before, seems to be made by Owner? They do make some nice products so i would expect it to be good. Izanas is the new name of the older Dyneema, which is what the JBraid grand is made of and that is a very nice line. I would like to test more of the Izanas to get a better picture of how good it is under test conditions.

@@thelinelaboratory and i was wondering about the size of diametre... The 34lb of kizuna has 21mm..and the siglon Adv 30lb has 27mm...which of them really accurate...🤔i already have a kizuna i used 20lbs and its so smooth and almost zero noise in the line roller..i want to use also the new ADv...but the size of diametre what im worried about...21 vs 27mm...in actual what im worried

Cool but your results analysis are wrong. 0.176 instead of 0.153 is +15% not +115%. +115% would be 0.328mm 16.2lbs instead of 10 is +62% not +162%.
