Thanks for sharing the video . I enjoyed watching this. May I have recommendation which you could consider to add more criteria besides your criteria’s - same size of braided fishing line - float and sinking line must be different in your test - X8 and X12 is not same - shocking strength - absorb water - water cut strength of line - long durability Thank you

Great review! One thing I am more interested is the casting distance, and ability to avoid wind knot for thin lines among different brands with the same claimed diameter, but I guess without a sponsorship from the fishing line manufactures, it's almost impossible to do. I am speculating similar price of Japanese brand PE lines will have similar performance since they probably have similar manufacturing process and material unless one has a patented unique process/material.
@thelinelaboratory
@thelinelaboratory 4 ай бұрын
Casting and wind knots are a very hard thing to test reliably, there are a lot of factors that can impact both. I would love to be able to test every line of every strength rating but its almost impossible as you said. not only does it cost a fortune, each line takes a couple of hours to test thoroughly. One could assume that lines in the same range by the same manufacturer would be similar as they would probably use the same (or similar) raw materials and be braided in the same way. Saying that, even a slight change in the braiding process can result in a disproportionate diameter change, thus affecting the tensile strength calculation which means it would be different for that line compared to other weights of the same line.

I've been a Power Pro user for over 15 years now. I never held any delusions that it was the best braid, but it always served me well at a reasonable price. Last summer, my best friend, whom I taught to fish, went on an international fishing trip to the wilds of Ontario Canada chasing smallmouth, walleye, pike, and musky. He asked me to help him get outfitted for his trip, and one of the things he wanted to do was re-spool all the reels he was bringing, just for the peace of mind that he's got all fresh line. Naturally, I steered him toward Power Pro... He wanted 20# on one of his reels, and he had some lighter and some heavier too. Once he began fishing with the 20# line, he said he was breaking off a lot... And it wasn't breaking at his leader knot either. It got so bad that his guide began to suspect the line was faulty... They stripped some line from the reel and were able to pull it until it broke with bare hands! So they tried to do the same with some 10# power pro and they couldn't break it. When he came home, we tried the same thing... Sure enough, I could break the 20# line, but not the 10#! We began to speculate why/how this could happen... Maybe they put lighter line in the package? Nope, the diameter of the 20# was definately larger than the 10# line and smaller than the 30# line. We figured it must be a bad batch, and got through quality control... Anyways, this is a long way of saying there's at least two anglers looking for a new brand of braid for next season, and we appreciate your work and sharing your findings.

Is there anyway to add a metric to test for vulnerability to wind knots? I purchased the varivas multipurpose braid based off your high recommendation but it loves to wind knot. Imho, the number of instances that I experienced wind knotting was enough to not use the braid =\. Thanks again for all the great scientific analysis! Cheers guys and happy new year! 🙌🙌🙌

If we could work out some reliable method to predict a wind knot then absolutely. From what I know it can be caused by many factors anything from line construction to the way it is spooled. With that many variables any kind of reliable prediction may be tough.

@@thelinelaboratory hmm… yea I was thinking about that and don’t have a good way of showing that. Maybe weight of a fixed length of line and time to fall set distance for that length??? Could do both dry and wet weights and times? I don’t know if there’s a direct correlation but it might be if some use. I know varivas lines that are around the 0.6goh diameter feel like they are extremely lightweight compared to other lines. I “feel” like that does have some correlation to increased chance to wind knot but I have no proof of this… Hopefully you guys can think of some metric as I think line “usability” is a huge factor to determination of good vs bad lines. Please don’t take any of this as a demand in any way just a humble suggestion to add more value to your already invaluable channel! Cheers guys and HNY!!!

I love how professionally and unbiased your tests are made. However the only test you may not be able to do is longevity/durability. I have used the Gliss in 17kg, this "braid" is great to cast, super strong and very thin, but after a few times of use the line starts to split - the individual strands become loose, seems like the material/process the use to bind the strands is not strong enough and this line is not braided. Every time i went fishing I had to discard the first 10-20 feet. I think this is why such a great line was not so great after all and hence the demand fell.For me my go to line has been the Sufix 832 for a few years now.

@thelinelaboratory
@thelinelaboratory 3 ай бұрын
All lines on the website have a price per spool and the length of line on it. You can easily divide one by the other to get cents per meter. But as for "value", i guess that's subjective based on what you feel makes a line good value. Is it outright strength, diameter, suppleness, abrasion...? I feel that a lot of people will have different criteria so trying to come up with a formula that pleases everyone will be very difficult.

Have you seen a significant difference between 4 carrier and 8 carrier abrasion resistance in the same brands?
@thelinelaboratory
@thelinelaboratory 5 ай бұрын
Interesting question and I actually crunched the numbers on that exact metric, looking at the abrasion break % as a function of its ultimate strength and there was less than 1% difference between 4 and 8 carrier braids.
@jamesbarron1202
@jamesbarron1202 5 ай бұрын
@@thelinelaboratory very interesting! I would’ve thought 8 carrier would be around 10% less abrasion resistant with the finer strands.
@userange232
@userange232 5 ай бұрын
The valuation refers to the purchase between what is declared by the manufacturer and the value obtained, however, the manufacturer can declare whatever he wants. A manufacturer could declare 2 kilos of resistance for a PE2 and the value obtained could be 4 kilos, which is +100%, and would be at the top of the resistance ranking, however, 4 kilos is a ridiculously low value. for a PE2. To really know how good a fishing line is, you must compare the lines with each other taking a common diameter. For example, buy all the lines taking as a reference 0.20mm of real value (not declared).
@thelinelaboratory
@thelinelaboratory 5 ай бұрын
No ranking that i do is based on anything claimed by the manufacturer, as i know that is way off 99.9% of the time, so I believe that addresses your first point. The % of max break (for abrasion and FG) is always against the measured maximum break, not the claimed strength. I will compare it to the claimed maximum but its really just for interest sake, and holds no relevance to any calculations. Second, your point about comparing lines of equal diameter is exactly what i am doing by using tensile strength. This takes into account any diameter differences and standardizes it to a common unit of measure so we can compare all lines independent of their actual diameter and breaking strain.
@userange232
@userange232 5 ай бұрын
@@thelinelaboratory Thanks for the clarification. I'm confident now. Allow me one more suggestion: When you have prepared the ranking, you have taken into account the values: tensile strength, knot resistance FG, abrasion resistance, however, I suggest you add the value "uniformity of the line diameter" since this value is related to the casting distance. This is something that all fishermen look for in a fishing line so it is an important value. Thank you for your hard work. This is really one of the best fishing channels I know (and not even a fish appears 😄 )
@thelinelaboratory
@thelinelaboratory 5 ай бұрын
Appreciate the feedback. The uniformity of the line is something I measure, but call it "out of roundness". It is listed for any line that's been reviewed in the last few months since I introduced that test, but I don't have it as a parameter in the summary table for all braids. I need to work out a better way to summarize all the data, there is so much that it's a challenge. FYI - I find any line with out of roundness less than 10% what I would call top tier for this metric.
