Thank you for that demonstration, I've never noticed any issues when I use an odd brake setting, such as 1 or 3. I think any noticeable vibrations or noises most likely would be from worn or dirty bearings. or excessively loose spool tension, which would probably be the same also with even brake settings.

I don’t necessarily think it’s a myth that it is better to engage opposite brake shoes I think your test just proves it has little affect on casting. Technically unsymmetrical engages brake shoes would case an imbalance in the forces exerted back on the spool. Also it is a lot easier to make the dial on the spool for engage brakes sequentially so that’s probably why manufacturers made it that way also taking into account that there really isn’t a noticeable difference for fishermen.

Engaging the breaks evenly is recommended by all the manufacturers and it makes sense to keep the spool in balance

Thank you for the demo. It only makes sense that the position of activated brakes shouldn't matter, since people can go down to 1 brake to get max performance and that's definitely asymmetrical.

Yep, in some of my field tests I used 1 brake to get maximum distance

I've yet to see a reel manufacturer that doesn't recommend to set them opposite of each other,it may not significantly decrease performance immediately but Id almost gaurentee it will long term

It does affect the reel with having only one break on . I remember this time I was fishing for salmon in sacramento river I fished my limit. I went home and opened my shimano tranx to clean the reel and by accident I left only one break on and believe guys that reel it was not the same I was getting so many back slashing the reel was rattling so much in other words the reel was tearing apart in my hands I opened the reel and I realized that the break system were on even. But that shit it does happen when you fish big fish.

This seems silly! I have never heard that disaster would happen if the opposite brakes were not set. It is a recommendation that they are. Therefore it is best practice to set opposite brakes. Why not set opposite side if possible? If not possible, you do you!

Magnetic braking is superior for one reason: there's zero friction which means zero resistance. You'll get the furthest cast with magnetic breaking.

No, not until you meet the criteria for that particular imbalance. but when you hit that zone where the wheels are vibrating all over the road, you'll be the first in line for a wheel balancing shop.

a little bit off topic here, what is the difference between curado and scorpion ? why scorpion rated higher than curado? are there any special feature in scorpion that curado does not have?

the scorpion has more bearings and the SARB bearings that seem to cast a little better than the regular shimano stainless steel bearings(SS)

about the shimano core, how light the lure and how far have you cast with it? i think i want take one and use it for finesse (less than 1/8 oz) what do you say?

Ive never measured the core before because its been out of production for so long now. Id say it can go down to 1/8th but there are shallow spools for this that can go alot less

hard to say really, because the Core 50 is one of my personal favorites, but performance the Aldebaran is just a little better in my opinion.
