How to adjust your brakes and magnets.

Today i'm going to show you how your braking system works on a baitcaster and a few simple tricks to improve your reel. So, the first braking system that we are going to talk about is going to be a centrifugal braking which is where you will have small tabs that spread out when you throw your line and will make contact with a brass ring to help slow your spool down so it doesn't over spool itself. The second braking system is going to be a magnetic braking that has several magnets that pull against your spool. I'll show you how you can adjust these so your reel will perform better and last longer. Thanks for watching and i'll see you next time.

Good video. Maybe you could expand on how lure weight affects the spool tension and show some casts with the magnets cranked up and loosened down. I typically use spool tension for lure drop. Is there another way? I have several reels, and also a few DC reels. I know that that they are set up differently. Thanks, Brian

Brian Bachli I can do that. I haven’t messed around with the DC reels much as far as the internal parts but I don’t think you can really adjust them much more than what’s on the side plate. I’ll have to look into that a little more.

+UpState Angler winter is definitely a good time to take them all apart and clean them. I usually go through all my tackle and sharpen hooks and change some split rings or whatever else needs done.

I can't find the quantum pt with the magnetic brakes with the adjustable spool. I have 4of the ac100 sp ordered another and it doesn't have the magnetic brakes

You probably have a centrifugal braking system then. Which should have tabs to click on and off for the braking.

I was taught that the last tension knob is fine adjustment for every lure you put on. I hold the rod at a 45, with the lure near the tip, and loosen the knob just until the lure starts to drop. Not sure where I learned this......probably from my dad, on 25yrs ago on my Quantum EX500. Thoughts?

Brian ,that was the way I was taught also. Lol It actually works pretty good but with the newer style reels they have better braking systems to help control all of that. 25 years ago they weren’t throwing 2oz swimbaits or Alabama rigs. If you use that tension knob too much with heavier baits it will start to wear out and you’ll have to keep getting it tighter and tighter and then it won’t hold anymore.

If you fish with no spool tension and your brakes on about 70%, you'll get the furthest casting possible, reduce backlashes, and a smoother drag.

I bought a reel and it has magnetic brakes but, the god damn thing has an aluminum spool. Any advice on what I should do? Thanks

Axelandru_yt I would like to see how that would work. Lol. If it’s an aluminum spool I would imagine it has a centrifugal braking system or a metal ring around the outside of the spool. You can send me a picture on Instagram and I will look at it. Link is on my homepage.

why don't they use this braking technology on bicycles? I guess they won't be able to sell brake pads if they do.
