We're fishing Port Hughes jetty on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia looking to catch a feed. We target squid, whiting, tommy ruff (Australian Herring), and even the elusive Yellowtail Kingfish.
The Port Hughes Jetty offers a large array of fishing opportunities for beginners to experienced anglers. It is a fishing hotspot on the northwestern coast of the Yorke Peninsula.
This fishing video has a lot of tips and tricks and fishing techniques and we share several squid catches and a surprise hook-up with a cuttlefish who ends up taking a souvenir with him.
Jetty fishing at Port Hughes is a great opportunity with a general store at the start of the jetty, public toilets and food.

Yeah, sometimes I just get too much into the fishing and forget, or weather is no good to use the drone. On this occasion, I was there nice and early and had time... it definitely helps break it up and showcase the location.

Hi mate, well done. If I'm chasing whiting on that jetty I always move up and down the jetty with a rod and cast into all the sand holes, often it's the ones a little further out that are holding whiting.

@MattsFishingEscapes
@MattsFishingEscapes 29 күн бұрын
Sure. Some we're caught on teasers, others on straight jigging. I cast and let it sink for 6-10s, depending how deep you're in. You want to be as close to the bottom but not getting weed or snagged. Then give some aggressive flicks 2 or 3 times. Let it sink for about 3 - 7 seconds. Rinse and repeat. Squid generally grab it on the float down. Then when you flick you'll feel the weight and pulsing of the squid. #tightlines

Mate! Keep up the videos, love your work. Another fella mentioned it but yeah salt the cockles. They stay on the hook better. Grab a bag of them, shell them onto some news paper, and sprinkle some salt on them. Let them dry for an hour or so then put them in a Tupperware container. Sprinkle a bit more salt on the top. Also for the big squid/cuttle fish get your self a crab net and you can use that to retrieve them as opposed to pulling them up by the line

I've fished off that jetty many times with not too much luck. I've caught a few garfish but I've noticed when the kingfish come in and everything scatters. To make it more frustrating it seems the kingfish only pass through and move on pretty quickly. I've heard Balgowan is a good spot just south of Port Hughes but has no jetty. I'm a new sub, thanks for sharing!

Hey mate. Garfish has to be 23cm from the small upper lip to the tail. I’ve been doing Yorkes over the last few week with little to no luck. I’ve done a 180 switch and gone to rapid bay instead and boom, fish galore. Lots of kings around there atm too. I’d like to see you do a rapid bay trip. Burley, paternoster with size 2 hook and a cockle. Lots of line burning fun on the trevally.

Ah yes, I just double checked my fish measurer, 23cm... Thanks for that. Lucky he was to size. I do need to get down south... I live near Barossa so it's a fair hike. Really about the same as Yorkes, but feels longer due to going through the city. I also need to do it on a weekday to avoid the crowds on the tiny rapid bay jetty... Oh the memories of fishing on the old jetty as a kid! Thanks for the tips.

Had one of the best sessions on the squid there a few years back with a mate. Quiet for most of the day and then went crazy towards dusk when we caught heaps and some really big ones as well. Had a good session at Second Valley last year and had caught enough in about 20 minutes although we could have caught many more if we kept at it. I even helped a Japanese Tourist with no idea catch a big one which created plenty of noise and excitement. I'm hoping to get back down that way in a couple of months.
