Fishing Spawning Bluegill on Beds

Fishing spawning bluegill. Bluegill on their spawning beds can make for a great day of fishing. Minnesota has lots of lakes and lots of bluegill for anglers chase. Fishing spawning bluegill is my all time favorite. The spawn is almost over, but I am able to find some late spawning fish and have myself a great day on the water. I share some tips and my opinions on the greatest of all fish, the bluegill.

First time watching your view..man after my own heart, I'm 66yrs old and the gills are my favorite to catch/fish for and eat as well. I wish we had the caliber of gills like you up hear in upstate NY but we do have some decent ones around here in bays off lake Ontario and in the finger lakes. Good job on some good proffesional videos.

I'm an Englishman living in Texas. Caught my first bluegill in a local pond the other day. Just a tiny one but I was happy. Makes a nice change from all the channel catfish which seem to be prevalent here. I'm a catch and release angler no matter what size the fish. But yeah it's a lot more fun watching the schools of panfish frolicking in clear water than waiting for tug from a nasty bottom feeder in a muddy bayou. Next week I'm rigging up all my rods for sunfish and crappie. Great video.

Man I am right there with you. I believe bluegill are the best fighting fish for their size, especially on light tackle. Got my girlfriend hooked on fishing because of taking her to get bluegill. Funnest way to spend summer.

I agree with you on the size for keepers. Bulls and big females go back. But if the lake is polluted with small fish, i will keep them in 7-8" range as some lakes are stunted.

I love to catch bluegills on wet and/or dry flies with light tackle, especially from a kayak. The keepers seem to beat the dinks to the wet flies almost every time. Also they seldom swallow the flies deep as they do bait, so fewer disgorging injuries. Here in Colorado I frequently run into people fishing who don't even know that bluegills are good to eat! For me they are right up there with trout and walleye. I also agree with your keeper size outlook. Smaller ones are not worth the time it takes to prep them for just a few cautious bites around the bones. Two to four of the right size make a generous main course serving. Saute and eat egg sacs too... delicious!

Great video. I only really get out to target gills once a year on the beds. Put away 4-5 pounds of filet in one trip and then I can return to my passion that is walleye. I target mine with crickets under a float like when I was a kid and watching the float start to dance, or plunge under, or start cruising is such a blast. I do pick up enough walleye fishing for a few meals too. Wish my gill lake wasn't such a drive or I would fish them more. We don't have a limit here and I wish we did. Cleaning any more than 25 at any one time is painful lol.

bro... i like the slow drop method.. i use it a lot with red wigglers and crickets.. and sometimes the cricket even will float on top and the blue gills will come out of nowhere and pop it really fast like lightning and it is soooooo fun and awesome i think im bout to head out tomorrow and catch a few

Where I live, hell I just find a nice place next to reeds and drop a hook in the water with some line, they bite just the hook lol. I use them for bait when i go cat fishing, maybe I'll give them a try to eat next time.

hey man, sorry to be replying so late, but i figured that you would appreciate a reply. there are great panfish rod and reel combos at walmart for less than twenty bucks. and, you dont need a leader for any fish without teeth or if you are fly fishing in my opinion.

Ummmmmm. You are really good about informing people about good eater size fish and protecting the population. You are forgetting one major thing... You are fishing the spawn and targeting the beds. Frying up the bluegills that are supposed to be protecting the 50,000 eggs. Yup, that just doesn't make any sense man. In this case i would rather see the daddy stay on the nest than end up in your belly. Great video though. Looks great. Makes me wanna get on the water.
