Back when I was a prawn fisherman we found that we needed to run our gear twice a day..Once in the morning and once in the evening otherwise we had them escaping through the web..They get out tail first..back out through the mesh!!

@@Skipper_al ..There is study done from a university in alaska back in I think late 70s...they had spot prawns in a big tank and they put a baited trap inside the tank..Some prawns found the tunnel some went through the web to get in..Then they put the prawns inside the trap and the bait on the outside and almost all went through the web..couldn't fine the tunnel hole....They go through tail first and stretch out..back right out!!..If I can find the study I will send it to you..I read it in like 1985 when I was fishing Southeast Alaska!

I stopped there late one night, probably midnight or so, and a guy was living in one of those shacks. Came down by lantern light with his dog to help me tie up and bs'd with me for a bit, then shook me down for a "moorage fee." I paid him a little, he looked like he was in need of the $20 more than I was at the time. 2015, I think.
@Skipper_alКүн бұрын
@@caskillet yeah I have heard from other people that you are supposed to email someone before you go there but that was news to me. Apparently the land owners want to develop it. I could see it as when I was there there must have been 7 rich American yachts that stopped in each day. Thanks for watching!! 🦅🏴☠️

@@Skipper_al Hey cap...we're on the Stacey Rock out of Cortes island, old wooden boat built in 53, timbered stern, 1 1/8" yellow cedar planking, actually all the framework is yellow cedar. Just the captain and I fish her, our license is for Sockeye, chum, pinks..Captain also has his commercial clam license, a few oyster beach leases..we love sports fishing prawns and crabs lol. Helluva great life out there..when the government muppets let us fish lol. All the best Captain Al 🍁🏴☠️🍁 see ya out there brother, keep on kickin ass & taking names. Need to see the 2 day soak
@Skipper_alКүн бұрын
@@christopherwood4982 a lot of the time a 2 day soak can be worse because the prawns can actually escape from the traps. Not all the time but if the density is large enough they will eat the bait/ get bored and start to leave. 😂 thanks for watching!!! 🏴☠️🦅

How do you decide which prawns to keep, and which to toss back in?
@Skipper_alКүн бұрын
@@dancingrick9627 there is a measurement from the back of the eye socket to the back of the caripace (head) which is 33mm. If that distance is less then 33mm than it is too small. We have a set of callipers on the boat for measuring but you get an eye for it so you can end up sorting quickly. Also any prawn with eggs we through back so that it can spawn!
