Went out on the skiff in search of halibut and ran into a hot bite. There was action all day, even after the go pro died. All my fish came on the swimbait which made it even better. Jigging with a light rod has to be one of the best ways to target these fish

halibut at times follow their mates to the surface when one is hooked. A Female can have multiple mates and a quick gaff can score bonus fish.

Isn't the season closed? The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announces the recreational Pacific halibut fishery will close Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 11:59 p.m. for the remainder of 2020. Based on the latest catch projections, CDFW expects the 2020 California recreational quota of 39,000 pounds has been taken.

That is for Pacific Halibut. California Halibut (different species) is open year round. Pacific Halibut are the big 100 pounders they get in Alaska and are pretty much only caught in super deep water north of San Fransisco. These ones only get up to 50 ish pounds and can be caught from Oregon to Baja

@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231
@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231 3 жыл бұрын
It’s closed at the moment, and even when it was open you could only use about half of the pier. Winter storms keep damaging the support pilings. At this point it’s just a toilet for pelicans

How the hell? This makes me want to ditch live bait trolling for halibut but I have a feeling I wouldn't get the results you guys got, that's some halibut honey hole there. Do you use swimbaits when you're fishing 80+ feet for halibut? And if so, how heavy of a swimbait head do you use?

Is there like a weather pattern that you look for or is there like a time a year for striper
@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231
@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231 3 жыл бұрын
Time of year for Striper is definitely late spring and summer. There’s a number of good conditions I look for and the more you can get at once the better. Here’s what I consider in order of importance: fish being caught in the area, high tide, dawn or dusk, calm surf, overcast skies, bait in area, blue/green water.
