Awesome job! Caught a 46 incher in the kelp beds to the right of the wharf, when I was about 6. Well, I set the hook and went flying in almost, pops grabbed me by the back of my shorts, I was still holding on, pops brought it in and landed it, guess it’s his fish, then my uncle beat it with an oar. One of my most favorite fishing memories. That and walking down the wharf with it and back to the old Terrace Court Motel. What amazing memories here. Keep it up

Nice to see some minimalist fishing .show people that you don’t need to spend thousands if not tens of thousands of dollars on boats and equipment. I used to catch halibut off the beaches in central Baja around seven sisters area in the mid 90s on just a plain chrome crocodile never thought to try it here in Northern California might have to give it a go

Grocery stores sell cheap fabric ice bags with top enclosures. If you could find something large enough in that category you could place a few slim cold packs in them enough to keep your fish cool while you finish your session. Just a thought. In fact I see them at Walmart in the grocery section all the time.

Your first "unconventional setup" is a shad rig. There are many ways to tie it but generally, it's called a float rig. Great catch by the way. Down south, fish are always more active than they are, here up north.

Great video. I’m just getting started with surf fishing and I have one question, are you allowed to have two rods on the beach or do you need to get some sort of second rod validation with your license? It’s not like you’re fishing with both rods at the same time. Just wasn’t sure if you need to pay that extra fee for just having a second rod with you so you can go back and forth between the two of them. Thanks.
@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231
@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231 3 жыл бұрын
The second rod validation only applies to freshwater fishing, you can use as many rods as you want in the ocean. The exception to this is when fishing for rockfish or when in certain bays, so check where you are going

That's one dream day of surf casting. You'll remember it your whole life. But, if I ever set an expensive reel in the sand my Dad would've slapped me up the back of the head an called me a knucklehead, for good reason.
@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231
@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231 3 жыл бұрын
If you set it down with the handle facing down the actual reel won’t touch the sand. The handle can be rinsed off with no problems. I do it all the time and have had zero issues.

Anyone know where to get some dungi from the shore around the central coast? Recently I saw a borderline keeper that looked like it got washed up on the beach. I threw it back but it had me thinking maybe I should've thrown my snare out there.
@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231
@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231 4 жыл бұрын
I don't really know much about Dungeness snaring but it seem that the flatter beaches with multiple sets of breakers hold Dungeness at low tides. I've picked quite a few keepers that way while wading the beaches fishing.
