When you nose hook them with a circle hook, how do you set the hook or how do you know when to push the lever and start reeling? I was on a charter last week and had a 2/0 circle hooks on good sized sardines and kept getting hit on by keepers but never landed one.

When fishing with a circle hook you need to let the fish run with the bait for a few seconds and then put your reel in gear, point the rod at the fish, and start reeling slowly. The fish will hook itself when the line comes tight. Attempting to set the hook will pull the hook out of the fish's mouth.
