Fishing the Middle Branch Ontonagon River, Michigan U.P. West

The Middle Branch Ontonagon River in Michigan's Upper Peninsula offers several sections of good fishing including two rated as "blue ribbon". The brook trout seems to be the most common but rainbow and brown trout are also reported to exist, and some are reported to get large. It also holds a couple scenic and popular waterfalls, particularly Bond Falls.

A couple other people also compared me to Rick Steves. I suppose that is a good thing. I plan to return to the U.P. soon. No, I have not floated this section

Is winter fishing on this stream advised? I'm planning a trip to the UP and want to camp/river fish as I have no clue how to ice fish nor have the equipment

I have never fished past Oct 1 when the inland trout season closes. Ice can be unsafe on streams.

You can fish year round downstream of Agate falls, winter fishing there is tough but doable..watch your footing and cross smart

I never carry bear spray in Michigan. I often carry bear spray in the Rocky Mountains. But I also always carry a pointy wading staff which can be effective at keeping a black bear away, or a dog.

I went to school in Houghton (Michigan Tech). I spent a lot of time in the woods gathering firewood, hunting grouse, and fishing for trout (I studied a little bit too 😎). I never saw a bear. Ever. Saw some sign but not the actual bear. They stay away from you.

I’ve seen plenty of bear up here. My family has been here for 130 years and nobody’ knows of anyone having a problem with bears.
