01/04 - My friend Mike C. and I decided to go to the New Jersey Pine Barrens for some Pickerel action! We explored and fished three different locations: Chatsworth Lake, Oswego Lake, and Hammonton Lake. Despite our efforts, the weather was quite brutal! Thus, we finished the day with very limited results. On the hand other, we each caught a few fish; therefore, we didn't get skunked. Hah. First fish of 2016: A Chain Pickerel!
Long Days and Pleasant Nights! Tight lines, KZbin viewers!

First adventure of 2016! Please read the description of this video for a summary. Each location is disclosed at the end of the video (14:15). Note that this is my first attempt in raising the quality of the videos here by 10 frames per second. In other words, this is the first ever LONG 1080p60 video here on the Channel. I know that the sound in this video is still muffled; however, this problem has been fixed as for sessions after 01/12! Next video, on bottom feeders, will have better audio!

Fish regularly in Philadelphia too. Surprising to me how many lakes in South Jersey loaded with pickerel, unlike Southeast PA. If you really want to have fun catching pickerel in South Jersey, buy a canoe, and use an artificial frog in openings in the vegetation on the top in so many South Jersey lakes. The pickerel really come up and blast the fake frogs in breaks in the lily pads and other vegetation.

My first fish of 2020 was about the same size. I also caught it in January, but I caught it on a small white chatterbait. I have never been so happy for catching a 7in fish. I lost 5 fish that day and that one pickerel was the only fish I caught that day.

I'm from South Jersey (Pine Hill, NJ) and catch these fish a lot. Just a hint when the small ones seem to be the only one's biting and you keep missing them it's because the smaller ones seem to strike from the side of the bait, use a smaller hook I use a #6 or even a #10 and hook the minnow through the side towards the top dorsal fin. That seems to wok for me...

If you hook live bait through the back dorsal fin , it enables the fish to swim more naturally.( just a tip )
@extremephillyfishing
@extremephillyfishing 8 жыл бұрын
+Gaige Jacobs I appreciate the suggestion, Gaige Jacobs! And it does make sense. I am so used to hooking my minnows through the lips for Catfish that I do it that way for everything; although, hooking it through the dorsal would probably have been better for lie-in-wait predators. Tight lines!

Maybe you should try a treble hook, it seems to get a tad more hookups:)
@extremephillyfishing
@extremephillyfishing 8 жыл бұрын
+M&M Fishing311 Using treble hooks with live bait definitely increases the odds of catching fish! On the other hand, using treble hooks also increase fish mortality due to internal injury. For that reason, I usually go with my regular barbed J hook. I am not a hypocrite to say that I go to the extremes of "safe angling;" otherwise, I would be using barbless hooks. But I do try to keep the fish as healthy as I can upon release. Thanks for the suggestion, though! Tight lines, M&M Fishing311!
@mmfishing3118
@mmfishing3118 8 жыл бұрын
+Extreme Philly Fishing yeah, good point if you where going to keep them then you may want to use a treble hook but otherwise, a single hook would be ideal.

I know exactly where that lake in Chatsworth is. Do you know if anything besides Pickerel live in that lake? I could take you to a couple of good spots in the Pine Barrens, but they have to be strictly kept secret.
@extremephillyfishing
@extremephillyfishing 8 жыл бұрын
+Naker Phelge I have no idea, Naker Phelge. That was my first time down there and it was pretty cold! During the Summer time, I plan on doing some Multi-Species fishing around that area. Also, I appreciate the thought of sharing spots with me; however, as you know, everywhere I go to is revealed here on the KZbin Channel. Thus, please do not tell me where you fish at. Lol. Eventually, I will find out by exploring. And when I do, it will be through my own efforts. In other words, I won't be hurting anyone's personal feelings when those places are revealed on my Channel. Tight lines!

+nj fishing also one last thing next time set your hook to the side you get more leverage and the hook is more likely to stay in the pickerels mouth
@extremephillyfishing
@extremephillyfishing 8 жыл бұрын
+nj fishing Scientifically speaking, the angle of the hookset shouldn't influence catching ratio. But then, of course it depends on which Species you are targeting. I am sure that there are a few Species of fish out there where your hypothesis applies. Tight lines, Liam!
