Pine Barrens Pickerel.

On a nice little stretch off work I'm greeted with a rare Mid May noreaster. Frustrated and tired of staring at 30-40 knot NE winds, I drive about 45 minutes Northwest to explore the beautiful New Jersey Pine Barrens and some old cranberry bogs. Target species: chain pickerel.
Found some action. Lost a bunch. I really lose it between 15:00 and about 18:15. My internal monologue is just hilarious.
I think growing up I was so spoiled at just how good my local ponds were. I had some real good largemouth bass fishing just a short bike ride away, and still to this day the biggest pickerel I've ever seen. Legit 2-3 footers.

Nice. Reminds me of fishing for chains when I was younger, too. We'd use shiners and a bobber. You knew when you were going to get a hit - the shiner would see the pickerel and freak. A frantic bobber meant an imminent bite. Thanks for posting, the Pine Barrens are a treasure that need to be protected.

As a guy who grew up in South Jersey, fishing in the pine barrens, this is right in my wheelhouse! I can catch chain pickerel just about any time, as long as the water isn't frozen over! When mother nature is against you, the pickerel will usually still bite. They're not too picky, either!

Thanks so much Dennis. I use NOAA and Buoyweather. Fishweather is good as well as Windfinder. But my two go to's are NOAA and Buoyweather I just have confidence in those two together over the years.

Everybody swears by the Daredevils, but I do really good with inline spinners and little jerk baits. Pickerel aren't known for being too picky, though! I do like the spoons in the wind to help you cast!
