Rapid River is one of the must-fish rivers of Maine for the serious angler seeking brook trout and landlocked salmon. An excellent place to seek solitude and nature.
Rapid River is approximately 5 miles located in the northwestern portion of the state of Maine flowing from Lower Richardson Lake to Umbagog Lake. The river holds landlocked salmon, brook trout and, unfortunately, smallmouth bass, which is an invasive species. If you happen to catch any smallmouth bass, please harvest the fish to reduce the threat reduction to the brook trout, which it feeds on.
Louis Dickinson wrote a few books while living on the Rapid River - one of them called "We Took to the Woods." A few popular Maine flies were developed near this river, including Carrie Steven's Grey Ghost and Herb Welch's Black Ghost.
Check out Bob Mallard's "50 Places - Fly Fishing the Northeast" for some excellent information on about the river, including access, flies and species.
