I also liked it when my mother ran her hands through my hair around that age. I found it to be calming for some reason, but I’m not sure why.

When Helen Keller was first learning to talk around age two (before she lost her sight and hearing) she also said wa-wa instead of water. Therefore some (if not most) of Simon’s verbal constructs are the same ones that most toddlers come up with when they are first learning to talk (even if it’s a bit later than average in his case). This shows that he’s learning one step at a time and he should be able to catch up with his speech by the time he starts either kindergarten or first grade in the next two to three years (especially with all of the speech therapy he is getting). It looks like Simon understands the concept of water. Maybe his therapist can have him work on the pronunciation of the word “water” at some point.

Did not fish much when I was a kid, and never caught much, except the time my sister caught me. We took my kids fishing lots.

Some observations on this video: 1. I remember that I used to chew on my shirt like Alistair does in this video when I was around that age. 2. Based on the fact that Simon is wearing underwear it looks like he’s pretty much daytime trained or at least extremely close to it. I’m guessing we can still expect to see a video on that in the near future. Also, as Simon’s social skills come along more he might be able to help Ezra out with his own training (showing him what to do, explaining how to do what needs to be done, etc). Simon’s not yet four but maybe he’s ready to start explaining things to Ezra or if not perhaps he soon will be. 3. It looks like pretty much everyone in the video is better at fishing than I am. 4. Also hearing the phrase “perfect cast” reminded me of “A Goofy Movie”. I wonder if any of you have seen that movie. 5. It looks like Simon’s speech, social skills, and counting are continuing to come along pretty well. This pretty much sums up my main observations on this video.

In the summer of 2018 I went fishing in Newfoundland on a tour boat with my dad and some other people and we caught lots of cod fish and were eating fresh cod for days after that. We also went again in the summer of 2021 and it was windy so the boat was rocking and I was getting sea sick and we didn’t even catch any fish. Then we went again in the summer of 2022 and my dad and I didn’t catch any but some other people did and we got a free fish and chips meal afterwards.

Since fishing spots typically don’t have rest rooms I have to wonder if Simon learned how to use a tree (for example with the help of either his father or one of his siblings (for example)) on this day? If so, then he’s doing much better training-wise than I did growing up. At Simon’s age I was only able to use the potty chair at home. Knowing how to use the big toilet in the downstairs bathroom at home would only happen for me when I was around six months older than Simon is here. Even if Simon didn’t figure out how to “go” outdoors on this particular day and ended up having some accidents he’s still doing quite well for someone his age. By way of comparison my father was only able to successfully teach me how to do this when I was almost exactly three years older than Simon is here during a potty emergency on a family road trip. Even so, I was not yet able to generalize this skill and only about three or four months later a classmate in my first grade class had to show me how to do this again on a field trip in a situation where an outdoor restroom in a picnic area was closed for the season. I also had to learn how to use one toilet at a time until I was at least six years old. In this respect I struggled with generalization. The differences I list above sum up some of the differences between level one autism (like Simon has) and level two autism (like what I grew up with) at least when it comes to toilet training.

We mostly used to go fishing with my grandpa, and I'm not sure I've been fishing since he passed over 20 years ago. But I've never been an outdoorsy type, nor am I a huge fan of fish as food (except tuna).

My father catches fish, and we eat it only when it’s big. 🎣 Using a sharp hook 🪝 makes it easier to catch fish. There’s also cooked fish served in seafood restaurants, and frozen fish you can purchase in grocery stores where the seafood section is. 🐟
