Wow, Looks like my wife did 20 years ago.. But, she went back packing with me, before we got married. And does not like fish. But we love walking the dog on the beach. Cayucos has a great dog beach and lots of people surf fish there.

Using a drop shot rig works best, Carolina rigging it like you have their is okay but the bait gets washed in and out of the surf. Where is this spot your at if you don't mind me asking?

Yeah that is a fish finder rig. Tangles are all part of the game but one tip I would give to reduce the tangles would be to increase the size of your leader.
