If you drop the mud closer to the whole in one spot it is easier and quicker to refill . nice video thanks for posting ! I dig up here in WA by the Dungeness Spit and Sequim bay . Dug gigantic butter clams once at the Makah rez. out in front of the Coast guard it is public beach . Red tide has Butter and Varnish off the menu .

May I know how long take you dig to the limit ?
@FishingChef Жыл бұрын
Usually 1-2hrs

No stupid questions warning: it seems like you need to dig a good 2'-4' to then reach down and grab the clams. Are their siphons truly that long when fully extended such that they peek out above ground, and then retract all the way down into the shell when startled? Or do these clams somehow "shoot" down or move some other way into the ground efficiently enough to retract the siphon and go into a hidden state several feet below? I ask because on the shot where you mention "the big one", it's almost like you could quickly grab the siphon and not let it go (assuming it's not completely delicate); or, somehow quickly dig at an angle to "scoop" the clam when its closer to the surface.

usually if the holes you saw is bigger then generally mean there is a bigger clam under the earth, you can't get them by just holding their siphon and not letting it go

I'm not a professional and have only gone a few times. I've never seen them stick their necks above the sand. As you dig, generally the sand will start to collapse, making them sink deeper into the earth. If you don't clear their shell part and grab them by their necks/siphon only, then you will likely break it off, killing them, and not getting the whole clam.

Is the siphon the only edible part of these type clams? Your recipe looks yummy!
@pr3ciousara2 жыл бұрын
No the whole thing is edible, but the siphon is the most delicious part (imo) because it's got a crunch to it.

I used to use the clam gun. Unfortunately, where I go, it's forbidden by law along with the PVC pipe, so I'm stuck with just the allowable shovel which is permissable. The rangers could never give me a convincing enough reason. 🙄 It's a little bit more challenging because of the collapsing walls and water buildup.

If legally harvested before soaking in freshwater, you should use the neck as bait for this is what all the predator fish feed on r at high tide
