Good video! A couple other things, make sure to put fuel stabilizer (Stabil or Seafoam) in your gas and top off the tank so you don't get condensation inside. Make sure all of the water is out of your livewell lines and bilge pump.

Thanks for the video it's always nice to have a refresher. Another thing to look for is taking off the prop and checking for fishing line because that fishing line in the front of the prop is normally what ruins that seal and allows water to get in your lower unit. Removing that, lubing the shaft and inspecting that area is an excellent preventative step as well.

Very informative video. I especially like the comments that this is one approach used for 5 years without any difficulties. One suggestion is to add the water draining portion. I am assuming the water drains out thru the ear muffs. Also, many boat stores or marinas service centers advise using an anti-freeze after draining the water. Most videos comment this is not necessary and is a money maker for the service Thanks again for the procedures.

Add the Sta-Bil to the tank before you do your 15-minute oil warmup. Always wise to smear some anti-seize compound on your plug threads. And to prevent cross-threading, always turn the plug COUNTER wise just until you feel the first thread "click" as it engages. Old mechanic's trick. I defer to outboard motor experts about fogging.

You forgot to mention that there is a high pressure inline fuel filter on the right hand side of the oil filler cap. It's covered by a neoprene sleeve and most people don't know it's there , have to check and replace it at least every 100 hours. Should also have removed the prop and checked the seal in front of the thrust washer for fishing line that can cut and damage it , grease up the spline shaft and replace the prop . Other than that good video on how to service this motor as well as other brands of 4stk outboards. 👍

This is a very good video as it is hard to find updated details on fogging a Merc 4 stroke. I've got a 150 (2015) and it is a beyitch to get to that 4th plug to pull and fog the cylinder. First time I'm seeing someone recommend spraying the fogging oil into the intake, so the dealer told you to do this? Seems much easier if it is as effective and won't damage/sludge the internals. Thanks again.

You can't fog an EFI engine the same say you would fog a carburated outboard it will damage your injectors. There is a special way to "fog" an EFI outboard, you need to run a special mix of gasoline and 2-stroke oil through it.
@muskyman32383 жыл бұрын
Just wonder if fogging is necessary for the 4 stroke outboard?
@davidnorth65413 жыл бұрын
@@muskyman3238 Yes. But it's easy. Just remove the spark plug and spray some fogging oil directly into the cylinders and turn the engine over. Done.
@chrisjanzen72696 жыл бұрын
You might want to check with your Engine Dealer are our Merc Dealer said we should not be fogging a 115 EFI engine as it ruins the electronic fuel sensors over time. A fuel mixture should be run through through the motor instead. 5 Gallons of non Ethynol fuel, 1 pint of 2 stroke engine oil, 1/4 cup fuel stablizer all well mixed in an external fuel tank and connector to engine to run out. It will save engine in long run.
@FishingPOV6 жыл бұрын
Chris Janzen thanks for that info. We’ve been doing this because the place we bought the bought brand new from told us we had to. I did read what you’ve explained and may start doing that instead.
@randymohr74776 жыл бұрын
This is correct. Fogging EFI engines is hard on the sensors and other fuel system components and shouldn't be done. Run a fuel mixture with a bit of stabilizer and oil, instead.

Barbara Bilyeu I’ve seen it in the upwards of $500 but it all depends on a lot of different variables area, size engine etc. this is something very easy to do and when buy the stuff a lot of it will last a couple seasons.
@danielrobert71814 жыл бұрын
Nice video but you might want to change the sequence of your interventions. First while driving back from your last seasonnal outing, fill the tank preferably with ethanol-free premium fuel (so as to prevent introducing water fhrough condensation) and add ethanol-free stabiliser. The rest of the drive home will allow the stabilizer to mix with the fuel. The stabilizer will make its way to the carb / injectors as you run the otor to warm up the oil before draining it out. Go easy with tightning the oil filter, a 1/4 turn passed the point 2 finguers rotation will get it is plenty. Its gasket should be moistened with new oil. Congrats on squirting a litte bit of 2 stroke oil in the cylinders (that's what fogging oil is) and turning the motor over a few revolutions (don't have it running). There is no point in fogging a running motor if it does't bog down and die. If the motor keeps on running, it will just burn the oil (that's your smoke coming out) while fouling up the spark plugs. Unless your 60 hp motor sports a BinFoot gear case, Mercury recommends (and sells) a lighter gear lube than SAE 90. Many happy fishing seasons to you !

Fishing POV wait what???? For real?? I was always told to Fog a 4 stroke too!! But by removing plugs and spraying it in there like that then cranking over a few turns to live inside.. Almost everybody I see recommends it, even on a 4 stroke
@mailliw754 жыл бұрын
Straight off mercs website....Fog the engine. Now that the motor is warmed up, remove the spark plugs and spray 1 oz. of fogging oil (for four-strokes and conventional two-strokes) into the inside of the engine to prevent corrosion. Look for fogging oil that’s specially designed for use during winterization, such as Quicksilver Storage Seal. With direct-injected engines such as Mercury OptiMax, use 1 ounce of DFI engine oil instead of fogging oil. A small oil can with a long flexible neck works best to inject the oil into the cylinders for this application. Russell also recommends putting a coat of anti-seize lubricant on the plugs’ threads before (carefully) replacing them.
