For maximum casting distance you want your spool to be full of line. It probably doesn't matter for spots and croakers but if you want to toss lures you want to cast as far as possible at times. I cast farther than most people at the pier and I get a lot of bites that other people can't get. The fish aren't far offshore, they're off to one side in a particular place and casting farther means showing the lure to more fish.
