I've had to figure out shrimp on the fly. I got some free that snuck in of some red root floaters and that got my wife wanting to set up a 5-gallon tank right away to protect them from bettas in the 29-gallon they were in. I got a 5 gallon, put in an inch of aquasoil and an inch of aquasand, tossed in some Vallisneria, ludwedgia, anacharis, a coconut with an anubias in it, some frogbit and some hornwort (all from other tanks). I let it sit overnight and then caught my shrimp and moved them in. First problem was I didn't aquasoil would release nutriants. The ammonia and nitrite were both at 2.0 PPM after a day and despite daily 30% water changes it stayed there for 2 days. I lost one shrimp, but after 4 days the ammonia was good and the nitrite level was down to .2 ppm. After a week, the plants are growing out of control, the shrimp are very active and I bought an assassin snail for some bladder snails that found their way in. I'm also shocked to say there hasn't been a trace of algae despite having the light on 14-16 hours a day to help plant growth reduce nutrients in the water.

I got 8 of them two weeks ago. Thought I lost all but 1 until yesterday night (lights out), when at least 5/6 of them were doing their thing. Apparently they've been hiding this whole time (aquarium is heavily planted). Their only mate is a scarlet badis. How long do you think it will take them until they lose their shyness?

Same here, we had 10 Blue Dreams. Noticed three unfortunately lost their lives over the weeks. Then spend further weeks panicking and searching for the others hiding in the plants. Another month goes by and we notice one of the females carrying eggs. Two months after that and our 200l tank is now littered with an uncountable number of them 😅

Question come filter , I currently own is a submersible pump . Whereby one end will suck the water up to a filter box which place on the tank , and water flow back from the fliter box. One thing is the pump inside the tank have an output which will push the water inside the tank. Will it affect the shrimp? I guess you should know what fish filter I preferring here , Of course I will use a sponge to cover the intake areas as there are holes.

My end goal is to have my guppies and shrimp breeding and having plenty of life in the tank. I have a 10 gallon well planted tank, with a moss coconut shell. Also do I add almond leaves or is it enough with the coconut shell covered in moss with a hole on top for bio film?

@FishKeepingAnswers9 ай бұрын
Best tip is provided plenty of hiding places for the shrimp, just in case the Betta fancies a snack!
@elliem53226 ай бұрын
What he said. I have small and medium plants in my 3 gallon Betta tank along with a few decorations (that I change out), a small piece of mopani wood and a coconut arch with Java moss on it. The shrimp love crawling around and under everything. Between his floating ‘log’, his ‘hammock’ leaf (although he uses the bamboo? to snooze on most often now) and the small duck weed I introduced on purpose my Betta seems to hang around the top most often now. I also put a pinch of peat moss in a small sponge in my filter to lower my very hard water (NE Ohio, 9ph), along with a fingertip dusted in mineral powder to help them molt. I’ve had much better luck with shrimp since I started doing those things.

I feel like theres not that much money to be made in shrimp so Manny people sell them now

Could be true, but quality always shines over cheap, so there is probably room for those who focus on quality 👍🏻

@@FishKeepingAnswers I have alot of shrimp I've been selling but I feel like it's hard to compete with mass shrimp seller's but I'm only 16 so it's just for fun lol

For what it’s worth, if I were in your shoes, I would pick one or two strains and breed the heck out of them. Become the BEST Blue Dream shrimp breeder or the BEST Black Diamond Shrimp breeder. Become know for breeding the best of whatever it is you love and go from there. Let me assure you, assuming you are a sixteen year old that doesn’t work full time, you have a massive advantage over most other breeders, which is you have time on your side. Would love to hear how you get on 🤞🏻

Started with 20 of them in my community tank, but now I have a ton of them. Didn't really do anything special except for feed them once every other day. Sadly, I can't say the same for my aquatic plants. My Java moss hasn't really done anything, and it's been over a month.

My plants die because algae grows on them and kills my plants

I would try turning the lights down (if you can) or reduce the amount of hours they are on for. Also, consider increasing the amount of fertiliser you give the plants. The stronger the plants are the easier they will out compete the algae 👍🏻
