Penn Battle III 4000 Is it the Best Nearshore Reel?!

Looks like a great vacation, even without a fishing rod! I'm a long-time, loyal Penn user, everything from the cheap, Fierce reels on up to my International 50Ws. Nothing but Penn reels on my boat.

I’m like you wanted to go fishing there no rods and reels had to go ride the jet skis. Hope you had a good time. Been using Penn reels 20 plus have some slammers and spin-fishers. Good luck on the flounder fishing!

Having moved to NC from learning to fish in Florida, it was all PENN all the way. I loved my PENN's! However, over the years when they outsourced the manufacturing, the quality and longevity gave up. I have had several different levels of the battles and all of them were great when new....smooth and not afraid of a fish! However, the corrosion started to kick in and they start to get stiff. I take great care of my rod's/reels and rinse after every trip. I have since switched over to the pricier Shimano's and not looking back. They are extremely smooth and not showing any signs of corrosion after a couple of years, maybe 3 now. Good luck and those Penn combo's are a great deal for sure. Enjoy!

That’s a sweet setup, I cheaped out went with BGs for my inshore setups. Still better than Walmart specials.

I was looking at the BGs but West Marine had a sale on the Penn Combos.

Looks like a really good combo I have a 5000 an 6000 there really good but a bit bulky that looks like the right size an well balanced

How did the testing go for that combo? I just got the same and I know the reels are legit as I already have 2 of them but not sure about the rod. My tackle shop sold the combo for $139 so it was almost like the rod was free as the reels are usually almost that much. Look forward to your response.

They are great. we slayed the sheepshead and black drum with them. My son could cast them and not get tired and the have the backbone to get the job done.

Looks like you went the same ports my family and I hit last year. I wanted to fish at the resort park and Labadee. Didn’t happen. I had to wait until we returned to ENC.
