I have the 3000 version of this reel. had the exact problem multiple times after kayak fishing. I never saw the issue but I service the reel after every paddle and the problem would go away. I assume it was a tiny grain of sand causing it to bind since sea water would always splash onto my gear. I love the reel and clean all my reels after each trip. I just feel for the guy that can't service their reel themselves...so, Dennis, your channel is a valuable service to everyone. Thanks.

I think your advice on backing off the drag when not in use is right on, especially for older reels with leather drags.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
it applies to all, but especially the felt and or leather ones. The grease dries and binds them to the metals and you lose the drag play. Dennis

Me too. The are plusses - look at today's cars. 200K miles is not unusual but then again, a computer failure seems the norm. Same thing with reels. More dependable but more things to go wrong

Wow, I see they redesigned the anti-reverse clutch. No more tiny spring! I'm guessing there's no more anti-reverse over-ride switch.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 10 ай бұрын
That is correct. Penn eliminated the A/R over-ride on the Pursuit, Fierce and Battle lines and many others have also done away with it. The A/R clutch that is sealed doesn't allow for those springs and over-rides - Thanks for the note - Dennis

Hi Dennis, Your videos have really helped me become proficient with servicing my reels myself, so I really appreciate you for that! I have one of these reels that has been used two seasons now. It is still as smooth as butter though. Would you recommend still opening it up and doing a full re-greasing service? Just oil the exterior moving parts? Or wait for it to show signs of needing service? Curious your stance on this. Thanks!
@2ndChanceTackle

I always recommend annual service. You can skip the service and pay the price when it finally tells you something is wrong, or you can service it and keep it going worry free - I prefer annual service - Dennis

@2ndChanceTackle

I use an awl, pick or pencil to hold and test. spin the bearing and listen for noise. Rock the bearing side to side to test for sloppy play and wear

Great video tutorials have you one on the Penn Surfblaster 8000 also do know if its possible to upgrade the bearings in it so it runs smoother and the line lay seems to be wrong, so need to add another washer sonething that seems very common on the Surfblaster apparently
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
The Surfblaster was not sold in the U.S. so I haven't seen one in for service. Yes, you can upgrade bearings with like for like replacements or by ordering ceramic bearings. You need to measure the bearing and make sure that the dimensions are the same for inside diameter, outside diameter and height. - Most manufacturers will include a few washers to level out the line lay. It it is spooling too high, you need to add a washer. Too low, subtract one until it lies evenly - Thanks- Dennis

@@2ndChanceTackle thanks I built my own multiplier Xmas, I was going to buy a new reel but thought I'd have a go myself. I'm fine with multipliers but fixed spools I've not really messed with. Id like to change the bearings in my fixed spool for ceramics so I'll measure them. Here is a link to it and the description of the parts used kzbin.info/www/bejne/fnnTqHZ_oK6qprs

Hi Dennis, thanks for another great video! I dissembled my Battle III 5000, and cant seem to remember where the 4 shims go, can you help??? Looks like 2 gold ones and 2 silver ones. They looked like 1, but then I picked it up in my fingers and realized it was 4 different ones. Fell off somewhere in the process. Really appreciate any help!
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
The shims normally go on the main gear just under the side plate bearing. If you get the schematic, it will show the location. It is part 8A in the schematic you you can get through this link www.mysticparts.com/Assets/images/pennparts/schematics/btliii5000.pdf Dennis

Dennis, I’ve never bought one but what does an AR bearing like the one in this Battle III actually cost to replace. I was just curious. The only reels I have with AR bearings are the older type with override switches so I have no experience with these reels. Do you have any idea how many times in my years as a minister I answered theological questions with, “well, it’s a mystery.” Sometimes there isn’t a clear cut, black and white answer. I personally think you had some of that extra line caught in the spool and inadvertently freed it when you took the spool off but that’s a guess. I sent you a note today. Last night I got just about the last vintage saltwater reel still on my bucket list. - a Daiwa GS 9. I have three Daiwa 9000C reels that are very similar but this was the one I’ve wanted for a long time. We’re bracing for a tropical storm tomorrow here in Raleigh, NC. May God help all those affected by Hurricane Ian. - Chris

I hate intermittent problems no mater what kind of equipment you work on, then to make it worse, when you get it operating properly but don't know what you did. It can happen on anything mechanical , from something to a boiler that heats a large hospital or something even bigger

Those problems are so testy. I have a Shimano lever drag on my bench that comes and goes. UGGGGH! It usually comes down to aa minor part just out of tolerance. Perseverance and a sense of humor usually prevail!

Your drag cap is a stand alone assembly. Under the cap is the spool drag assembly. There is a retaining clip followed by 3 waters that are Atal and 3 fabric washers. They alternate fro the top metal, fabric and repeat. You top washer after the retaining clip should be metal. Thanks for asking - Dennis
