A fictional Naval battle between forces of the Royal Navy, the Regia Marina and the Regia Aeronautica in the Mediterranean Sea.

It was a pleasure and an honour to fly together with you Fishyyy and Marcom. We all hope to participate together again in the near future and in more missions :) I am Enry, the G.50 tagged 182-Red 9. It was great fun participating alongside with my mates at this great battle. We defended our fleet with everything that we've got (so far that I've covered at the best of my capabilities the fleet for 10/15 mins with a broken engine) and although outnumbered, we still defeated the whole striking force by losing the Caio Duilio BB. Still, awesome flying from all and it was huge fun dodging our AA fire and engaging the Swordfishes!

@@Karelwolfpup uhm well, looking up at the historical past of the Caio Dulio and Andrea Doria, it's quite outstanding what our naval industry was capable of doing: these ships were built just before WWI, saw limited combat in it, were almost erased from service only to be completely rebuilt and modernized in the 1937-40 period. If you look at the old layout and the modernized one, you can see the massive amounts of changes applied to these old boats in just 3 years. From being classic WWI-shaped battleships to almost "little Littorios". Nevertheless, despite the several and substantial changes and improvements made, it was still a WWI design at heart; compared to the ships of other navys they were obsolete. Their main weakness was all-around protection, and not sufficient weaponry. To be fair, although obsolete, they served well in escorting every italian convoy towards Lybia: their AA fire was good at keeping the enemy planes away and the artillery batteries were still capable of threatening the RN cruisers, destroyers and older battleships.

@@Karelwolfpup yeah exactly! They were used like some sort of heavy escorts that could fend off enemy planes as well as having an argument against most RN ships. Their protection wasn't enough against the most modern BBs but useful against typical convoy threats (so planes, DDs and cruisers)

Believe me, they were. Once we spotted the enemy, we broke formation and I did a 109-style dive towards them (almost breaking the plane XD) and engaged them right in the middle of the AA fire. Don't try this at home. XD

We played Il-2 1946 for a long time, and each of us has a lot of experience with this masterpiece of a game. In our group, we play weekly 3 times a week with the BAT super-mod. Every time I have an opportunity (like this one) to play together with others at this game, it's a perfect day. Come play with us! The more we are the better ;)

@@enricogolinelli5451 la BAT è inutilmentte troppo grande in termini di GB di spazio richiesto e troppo instabile dal mio punto di vista, non avrebbe senso scaricare sia ypack che BAT secondo me, penso che sia più vantaggioso ypack.

@@stralabastro142riguardo al peso ti posso capire, però considera che hai un secolo di aviazione dentro. BAT è l'apice delle mod di Il-2, è molto supportata e riceve frequentemente aggiornamenti con più contenuti. Inoltre, nelle ultime versioni il peso è sceso notevolmente, permettendo a chi vuole di scaricare solo il modulo della WW2 o tutto quanto. Riguardo la stabilità, secondo me BAT ora è molto stabile. Io l'ho avuta sin dalle prime versioni e ti assicuro che ha fatto passi da gigante. In ogni caso, il nostro gruppo vola BAT ma YPack è comunque un'opzione buona disponibile

Wow, that's could be easily an alternative story/end for some real historical air-naval battles. I would say Punta Stilo in such case, were they were two damaged ship per each side. And italian battleship hit was the Cavour, which could definitely be the one sunk here

I love how Roma opens up at almost 40kms and is actually pretty damned accurate. Royal Navy officers were impressively worried by received Italian naval gunnery during the war XD

Roma was far superior than the british ships like the Nelson, and Italian BBs main batteries in general had a better range.

From what little I have read about the Italian Airforce in WW2 this particular aircraft was very/extremely maneuverable. I have made a model of it. A nd another one that was powered by a Daimler Benz engine; it looked like a 109 surprise surprise! And then I made a model of the great Italian 3 engine bomber! They are tucked away in my garage some where and were 1/72 scale, so small! I'm going for the Italians as I have an Italian Brother In Law and I love my Italian connection, even though my dad fought the Italians in Greece and then again in North Africa, he fought the Germans in Greece Crete, North Africa and Italy, he even fought the Communists over Trieste! War is stupid, Putin is a FW, and all Russians are "Shivers Looking For a Spine to Run Up!" Russia has never had democracy and never will under its current path! Russia is a Russian Tolstoy Tragedy! I am so pleased I have no Russian ancestry! I my self am 1/4 Norwegian, 1/4 Scottish, 1/4 Irish, 1/8th English and 1/8th German..... and that's what I think I know about as there has been some reference to French and Prussian as well, anyway it means I'm a 4th generation Pakeha Kiwi who loves our Maori brothers and sisters! Go Ukraine! Love from New Zealand!

If I may inquire about what happened to the two nelson class battleships at the end? They both just seemed to disappear from the battle. Also how technically won that battle, or was it indecisive in the end?

At the time of this recording, I was unable to properly balance ship fights. All ships were particularly vulnerable to heavy artillery shells. Even cruiser fire would quickly sink battleships. I made the Nelsons disengage early, so that not all ships would be sunk during the battle. After the mission was recorded, I got the ability to make ships properly resistant to incoming shells. The newest version of this battle has the Nelsons basically charge in and it usually ends in a paddling for the RM.

Though I must admit, I did not expect the fulmars fighters to be so effective, I pretty much put them up to be another failed British plane. (Kinda like how they where in the real war so to speak)

The modern IL2: Great Battles is fully VR functional and a lot of fun. It's still missing content that exists in 1946 but is worth checking out.

Companies spend millions in making videogames that are fun to play and many fail. IL2 1946 is more than a decade old and it still looks good and you can build your own missions. No other sim has so much fun factor as this one, not even DCS.

Great to see a lot of British and Italian ships here as the stock IL-2 1946 greatly lacked ships, especially on the British and Japanese side (and there were no Italian Battleships). I mean, they included the Bismarck and the Prince of Wales, but not the Repulse and Nelson class, which makes having the former ships essentially pointless. I really hated how the King George V class Battleship was the placeholder Battleship as that only works for the Yamato and Iowa class, not the Kongo, Pennsylvania, etc. class Battleships. Though IL-2 1946 is an old game, it's the best flight sim ever made!

When this was recorded, I did not have the ability to balance battleships in detail. All ships were very squishy, so to say. In order to avoid everything sinking, I made the two Nelsons turn around very early. After this was recorded DarkenedFantasies made me a ship overhaul mod. I now can completely rebalance all ships. In the newest version of the mission, the cruisers turn around and not the BBs. Usually ends in a spanking for the RM now :)
